Merits of dealer service history - Chicken Vindaloo
My fellow Backroomers,

I've just had my four year old IS200 put through its 50k service. It's a year out of warranty and I got a bit of a shock when I got the bill. I wish now I'd extended the warranty as I'd have been quids....

This got me wondering. How much is a full dealer service history worth? If I had it serviced next time by a local chap (or even the local Toyota dealer), would this dramatically affect the resale value? I need to weigh up having it serviced by Lexus versus any loss of value having it looked after by someone else.

All thoughts welcome!

All the best

I may be a lone voice in the wilderness on this, but such has been the overwhelminly sympathetic and positive response that i have had from Renault in the past when any of my vehicles have needed major work doing to them FOC after the warranty period has expired, that I always stick to the dealer for warranty work.

You've probably paid for your FOC out of warranty work by higher servicing charges...
What Renault did you have Murph, a nice Avantime is my guess.

I can't see that a FDealerSH is worth paying for after the car is five years old. No mfr will cough up by then, and so you need to find a quality, local specialist who knows your make really well. Easy with the German cars, perhaps not so easy with Lexus perhaps.

hi Xileno

They were are Master vans & previously Traffic vans.
Over the years I've had steering racks, 2 x engines & 3 gearboxes all replaced FOC (as well as other minor bits of kit as well)
I know that it is popular to knock the dealer/manufacturer, but in my case Renault have been excellant

My V70 was personally imported from the Netherlands so VCUK made not a penny from the sale.
Since then it has had one service (the first) performed by my local dealer as well as the six month free "safety check" beforehand.
Both subsequent services have been performed by independent Volvo agents to Volvo standards.

As a recent thread of mine showed, this made not a jot of difference to Volvo goodwill even though I am now well outside warranty. I also had the upper engine (torque reaction) mount replaced FOC when outside warranty.

From the outset Mrs SjB and I planned to keep the car for many years so we're not worried about the effect on residual value of personally importing or non official Volvo servicing. In any case personally importing netted a huge saving and beat even the best UK price from any source.

My feeling is that a dealer service history only has value up to three years, 4 years at a push.

After that, your local friendly independent will do, specially if they stamp the book.

If i'd bought Renault vans and they needed "2 engines,3 gearboxs etc." I think I'd be driving Ford Transits now and checking my drivers out.

except I haven't said how many Renault vans I run, how long I've been doing so and how many miles per year that they do.

Thanks TVM - that was what I was thinking.

I vote for dealer servicing, the Mondeo is four years old and 110k though goodwill could still be forthcoming if required as are firmware updates etc.

However I have taken to doing non routine stuff myself to save a few quid, brakes etc.

As a person in the industry, probably like many on here, I think (possibly controversially) that there's an unfair bias towards those who saty within the network out of warranty.

If anyone knows about block exemption, not the world's most exciting subject, it seems to get short shrift from most manufacturers and dealers.

Any thoughts?

What was the work and what was the bill???

Sorry, I'm responding to the first message in the thread (Chicken Vindaloo)

No worries - I worked out what you meant.

The work was:

- 50k service
- Replace coolant pipe
- New pads at front
- New pads and discs at back (discs had corroded)

Total bill was £710. I'm not disputing the work done (the brakes were slightly less than reassuring before!) but I'm sure it would have been cheaper at a Toyota dealer or independant. I'm planning on selling the car in the next 12 months and my original thought was whether it would make a difference to the car's value if the log book/receipts all had Lexus stamps on them.

All the best,

I wouldn't pay extra for full dealer service history over a full independant service history.

If you had extended your warranty, I think it would have only covered the coolant pipe. The rest are due to wear and tear / and classed as consumables.

For a Lexus or other premium car, I expect that full manufacturer's service history will make the car more saleable, but may not actually increase its value. For a volume manufacturer, I doubt it will make any difference so long as you can demonstrate the car was properly maintained.

Put it this way: FiL is on his second BMW 3 series, bought at 3 years old from a BM main dealer with with full BM service history. Its up for replacement soon, and he won't trust a car that's been outside the dealer network (whether he's right is another question). But the Focus that hauls the dogs about was chosen simply because it had a service history that could be verified - didn't matter whether it was serviced by Ford or not. Same went for the Cavalier that preceeded it.

Sold my Lexus without full Lexus history - last couple were an independent.

As I've always found when selling every car I've ever owned, they cared not a fig about main dealer history, (and in fact on this occasion gave me 2k over what I was expecting from research, which cheered me inordinately, especially as the replacement was about a thousand under what it ought to have been). Caveat - every car I've ever sold has been outside manufacturer's warranty.

As to getting a Lexus serviced at a Toyota dealer you'll be hard pushed to find one that will do it I think. "Not allowed to touch 'em, guv'nor, has to be done at a Lexus dealer", where of course labour rates are somewhat higher! Even though in many cases (my local being one of them) they in fact drive it from the Lexus dealer where you booked it in to the Toyota dealer next door where the Toyota mechanic then works on it...

At the complete other end of the spectrum, when I was looking to buy a XUD Peugeot 306, I was pretty much overcome by seeing a full main dealer service history for a 10 year old car. It had all the receipts and all the stamps - an awful lot for 100,000 miles and 10 years.

Noting the history (esp. cambelt change, oil at every 6,000 and coolant & brake fluid at every 2yrs) I was happy to pay £200 over the odds. Worth it for me, but certainly not worth it for the guy who paid out thousands over 10 years.
