Recently whenever I open this site, I can open the index page no problem but if I open Discussion or Technical, you can see the page loading across the base of the page then suddenly the whole of explorer shuts down. This only happens on this site, no other.
Microsoft suggests from the "Error Reporting" to shutting down of some of the unkown 'Managed add-ons' to explorer with no effects.
I've tried allowing cookies etc. This is IE6 and XP with sp2.
I'm doing this on another PC and I know its nothing todo with motoring, but its a pain when you can't enter this site on your own PC.

Same thing happening to me, on five different computers, all running XP SP2, mostly IE6 but one with IE7 beta 3. Has been for a couple of weeks.
Saw the bulletin relating to what Dalglish mentioned, but that applies only to SP1.....me & autumn not running this. That it doesn't crash all the time points to a dodgy ad server for me.
Don't think this should be in CRQs, might be worth Khoosys hunting down the problem.

my windows me at work has been doing this for 4 weeks now ive done everything to try and cure it but that microsoft last download does sound the reason to me i will go in in the morning and see if i can find it and kick it out

FWIW I am having no problems from home or work, XP Home, IE6 and SP2 at home no idea what the NHS provide me at work but whatever it is it doesn't crash!

strangely wifes computer at work (nhs) also hasnt crashed for ages yet it used to do it weekly
they now have dells she says which are slow but do work they are all networked as well

lee - i read the link i quoted and was not too sure about its meaning .
as i understood it, they were saying that the crash happens to all xp machines using ie6, but that the new security hole that the crash creates applies only to sp1.
which is why i said "may or may not" in my first post.

Also try updating Flash and Macromedia plugins, as there was a version of these that caused IE to unexpectedly quit when certain sites with certain content were visited, and this site seems to have a few animated adverts.

Will this update fix the createPopup issue as well? A lot of our customers are reporting to us that IE is crashing when they use our web-application 24SevenOffice. This occurs due to a bug caused by using the createPopup function after the latest update is applied. This issue is not related to the IE6SP1/HTTP1.1 problem as the reports I have got customers used IE6SP2.
Can you please make a statement to whether this issue will be fixed in the upcoming update?

There now is a hotfix available from Microsoft for the popup issue. It is so far only available through Microsoft support; you must call and ask for hotfix 923996 for Windows XP or for Windows 2003. Such calls into Microsoft are free.
As there are so many users suffering from this issue after deploying MS06-42, I would hope Microsoft includes the hotfix that fixes the popup issue into the re-release of MS06-42 as well.
so it seems that either you remove the original patch and/or wait for a update to sp2, or phone microsoft for the hotfix, or use firefox.
by the way, i use xp sp2 with ie6 but have had no problems on any site including this one.

Yes, sorry, I understood what you meant - it's odd that MS don't freely distribute the fixes for some problems; I meant in my post that I'd get one of our techies to get hold of this and give it a go.

Actually Microsoft does freely distribute patches, updates etc. It's called WindowsUpdate..:-)
If you Enable, or already have enabled, WindowsUpdate from the Security Center (US spelling) any intermittent updates etc are downloaded automatically as well as the normal second Tuesday in the month versions.
When updates are being downloaded and installed, as you may be aware, a small yellow shield appears in the Taskbar.

Although I use WindowsUpdate, I usually download all MS critical updates etc manually as soon as they are released (second Tuesday in the month) as automatic updating can take a while (probably to prevent the servers being overloaded).

I have the same problem and can only view this site with Firefox on one PC but my notebook running the same version of OS on a VLA licence does not have a problem. It is only relating to this website

may i suggest you check out the links to the sof tware updates there. you will find that the updatefile version for sp2 is the original issue at 1st august 06, and that the sp1 update re-update is issue as at 24 august 06.
you need a forensic mind to follow details of software changelogs.

Every good reason to stop downloading the microsoft updates that abound. I know I have, as their recent ones have caused more problems than they are supposed to solve - so stop updating, I say!

This really is another world and another language, isn't it! I do hope I never have these problems (I'm on Windows XP) as I certainly wouldn't have a clue what to do about it....

Many (including me) are suffering with this latest incompetence from Microsoft. I would ask mods to indulge us a little longer - yes, it's a computer issue,but isn't this a site accessed from.... um... er... a computer. No access - no site.

Fair point, DE - it's obviusly a serious problem for some but it was getting to the point where mere mortals like me couldn't understand a word of what was being said.
Anyway I hope someone comes up with a solution that a layman can underatnd and apply.

At home I am having no problems, using all of the up-to-date software versions (XP, IE, Netscape). Only at work is there the odd glitch when our Websense security system blocks some of the pop-ups. In fact this has only started happening recently, so either the pop-ups contian illegal data or Websense has reduced the tolerance of pop-ups.

No problems here on SP2 / IE6.
Reading between the lines it seems they thought that the problem was when applying the update to IE6 when running Win 2000 or XP SP1 though subsequently realised that it can effect SP2 if it is not fully patched in which case running Windows Update or Microsoft Update should sort it out.

cheddar - as i understand it, the problem is this: there was a security flaw which affected various microsoft operating systems. the problem was addresses by a fix issued as a security update in the 2nd week of august. however, this fix has resulted in many (but not all) systems running sp1, sp2 etc. crashing in conjuction with certain web sites that use a particular type of pop-up. in addition, it was discovered that the crash mechanism exposed only sp1 machines to a new security flaw. the latest updateissued yesterday to fix the mid-august update fixes only the security hole in sp1 caused by the crash. the crash problem remians unless you specifically request microsoft for a "hotfix", and that "hotfix" is currently (as of yesterday) planned to be released to everyone via auto-updates in the mid-september rollout of patches.
as to which sp2/ie6 machines are affected - it depends on a mixture of what other software and hardware you have, including pop-up blockers, spyware, firewalls etc. you are using.

I am not sure, but, in the last couple of weeks I think the ad agency has starting using a different type of pop up, I havent done any up dates on my pc's for a number of months and yet my pop up blocker is doing overtime on this site at the moment - alot of dell pop ups and dating type pop ups, which is perplexing swmbo and giving me some trouble as to why I am looking at those sites (explaining that they are pop ups does no good to a non techie!!) even with the blocker on the odd one still gets through and that is using FF not IE.

XP Pro SP2 + FireFox 1.5.0.6 + Adblock runs fine. The only site it does have problems with is ba.com, which seems to run some Java that causes problems if I have too many tabs open.

An unrelated query - the new tags on the site don't appear to be working properly this afternoon. At one point everything was marked as new, now the new doesn't seem to cancel after an article has been read.
Is this a problem local to me (I've emptied caches etc on Firefox) or does something at HJs end need resetting?

1) I did'nt have SP1 or SP1a.
2) I did'nt have any up-dates from Microsoft.
So none or any list of links to the above proved to be the cause of my problem.
The route of the problem was either a corrupt version SP2, for which I've used many times for others, or after I un-installed SP2 and tried connecting to this site. I was asked to install by a pop-up "Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX".
This as it seems, has cured the problem. I shall re-install SP2 at a later date when all seems OK after a week or so and see what happens..

as of 2nd november 2006, microsoft have issued a public hotfix the solution to the problem mentioned in my posts above.

it has to be a trial and error solution because the problem seems to be affecting only some computers running xp-sp2 and on some web pages only, and seems to be unrelated to firefox or ie6.

This annoying fault happened to me for a while. With DD's help I pinpointed the problem and downloaded the latest version of Adobe Flash, as well as moving to IE7. No problems since.

Have never been able to use macromedia flash shockwave as it crashes IE constantly on XP sp2.
Did exactly as yourself last week Alastair with IE7 and the latest version of flash.
Everyhing works well. touch wood....
