Clicking from elec cooling fan - Mondeo - cheddar
Not a major issue however I have noticed recently that when I switch the Mondeo off and both cooling fans are running, i.e when the climate is on, the fans run on for a few secs before the ECU turns them off (which is normal) however one fan clicks as it spools down. I have checked for leaves and twigs etc though there is nothing fouling the blades.

There is no sign of clicking when it is running, no additional vibration through the cowling and the motor in question does not get any warmer than the other one, could it perhaps be a sign that the motor is getting worn, perhaps the brushes are getting to the end of their life?

Thanks.

Any thoughts anyone?

Could be wrong, but aren't the motors brushless?

Only going on experience of having to strip a cooling fan motor on a Cavalier that was making a clicking noise. One of the four magnets inside had become detached and was rubbing on the commutator. edit, sorry the shaft of the motor

Electric motors load the bearings in one direction (ie in an end thrust) when magnetic forces are at work but not when power is dropped. (its a natural magnetic thing) SO push the fan in and turn it by hand to feel for anything "clicky" then pull the fan out and do the same thing. There will be a fair degree of end float, in fact too much end float may be the problem.
