the engine light coming on is a classic on this car,its the egr, make sure they put a new one on £100 ish as cleaning on this model never works.
i like these cars many dont due to electric gremlins,i would be wanting the car for £2,200 with my p/x but obviously dont know where you are based so £3500 less £1000 p/x in your area might be a good deal.......

Hi oldman
Thanks for your reply
Im in the NE of England - I think though he has given me a fair price on the Laguna considering it has ABS fault - blowing exhaust and could do with new tires - i did try and get him to give me £1200 for the laguna but he wouldnt becasue i insisted that it needed a cambelt change wich he is going to do for me.
i do have to say that the :laguna is nicer to drive but i just cant be bothered to keep geting it fixed when things go wrond espcially the trouble ive had over the ABS on the Laguna.
But i do like the Astra a lot so i think another test drive is in order i think :-)

im pretty sure its the bulletproof 8 valve for this year rather than that (unamed thing) ;-)
but willing to take the medicine if wrong........
OP........if it is the ecowreck make sure the water pump is changed at the same time as the belt and get it written into your purchase receipt that all this work has indeed been done.......

get them to guarantee the mileage
get them to put in writing that the belt the tensioner and the pump has been changed.
make sure the one year warranty is worth the paper its written on
goog luck after that .......its only a car after all....
oh and its better than any laguna in my limited book......

Well im going to give it another Test drive on saturday
The Garage is very good with warrentys, and we know the owners well, thigs with my two Laguna's they bent over bavkwards to sort out, there not a dealer just a independant used car retailer.
But if there is anything bad about these then i do want to know, the CbC Breakdown report seems ok - (its not as big as the Laguna one) LOL!

i think you are doing everything right and its independant so they neither want nor need the hassle of selling bad unreliable cars.
go for it if you are happy with the drive, make sure the switches under the heater controls work and that the headlights arent full of condensation

One thing to add to your excellent list om
belt, tensioner, water pump *and* both idler pulleys
Oh, sorry, some more points!
If the car were mine, I would block off the EGR at the first sign of trouble, rather than pay out £100 every 18 months or so for a new valve.
I would also run a supplementary earth to the coil pack, and I while doing the cam belt, I would check the oil pump gasket - they extrude out between the bolts , which I would check to make sure they are tight. When doing an oil change, make sure that oil pressure is built up only by cranking (i.e. pull the fuel pump relay) the pressure pulse caused by suddenly building oil pressure has seen a few of these gaskets fail just after a service.
