200k Saab 900 T16S (1988): 1 litre every 6000 miles. Just made it between services without a top up. Traded it at 206k.

My 120k 525i used to use about 1/2 litre every 1000 miles or so. The guy at the garage told me it was normal. I'm less convinced.

My 75k 2.5l Galant doesn't use enough to be noticed between services.

113,500 '93 Polo: 0.25 of a litre per year (about 6000 miles). Strange consumption; that is this years figure, but it was only the second time in 6-7 years its been in the family it required topping up.

No matter how its driven, oil consumption remains pleasantly low (or non-existent). Fuel consumption: average at 48mpg but have had 58mpg three times now!

SWMBO's 1995 306 SR Sedan 1.8 XU7 8 valve.

A lowly and genuine 14k miles when we purchased it four years ago at seven years of age (2k per year) , since when a further 31k miles have been added (7.75k per year). So, still a very low miler at 45k.

I post though because the oil consumption averaged a litre per thousand miles or so in the first three years we owned it, but then stopped, completely, at a stroke. It now burns not a jot. Whilst it gets driven with mechanical sympathy and prefers surfing along in the mid range (2k-5k RPM) than being revved hard, it undoubtedly now gets used harder than with the elderly original owner, including motorways, the odd B-road fun, and occasional workout to the red line. it looks like the prehistoric lump under the bonnet has responded accordingly.

For the record the oil change regime is nothing more exciting than Halfords semi synthetic and OEM filter, changed annually.

225,000 miles on Rover 75 CDT with about 1/4 litre in 14,000 miles (last service).

118,000 miles on Rover 214 consuming a bit more at 1 litre per 2,000 miles (been consuming oil since 58,000 but not getting much worse!)

More than impressed to be honest with the combined mileage and oil consumption, just wish the K series wasnt as greedy!

Let's hear it for Renault for a change. Between 1980 and 2001 I had 7 big Renaults in a row, 3 of which went over 100k miles: none of them ever used, or leaked, a drop of oil. I always ran them in gently when new, which may or may not have had anything to do with it.

It seems from all these posts that modern engines last a long time if properly looked after. Strange, isn' t it, that this comparatively complex item should perform so much better long-term than other, simpler components. Maybe that's where more R & D funds are spent, since advanced engine design sells more cars.

1992 Nova 1.0 - 193,000 miles. used 0.5 litres of oil in the first couple of days after an oil change, down to about half way between min and max, then didn't use a drop unless you topped it up.

1991 Renault 19 1.4. 132,000 miles. Didn't use any oil at all.

1998 Escort estate 1.6. 119,000 miles. Hasn't used any oil, but I've only had it 2 weeks and covered 750 miles so time will tell.

Modern engines running on modern oil are very good in this respect. My Xantia TD (90k) and ZX TD (75k) don't use any (well apart from a bit that runs out the bottom of the ZX!). My BX TD didn't use any at 136k, and when I took the head off at that mileage there was no discernable bore wear - the hone marks were still visible.

Why the apparent obsession with low or no oil consumption? ie it is better to use no oil.

I disagree, I consider that a little oil used is no bad thing; so that over the course of, say, 10,000 miles between oil changes, there is some fresh oil going in the engine periodically.
How much oil does your high miler use? - Roberson
Yeah, oil consumption is no bad thing (in moderation) but isn't going to make your engine last longer. Similarly, no oil consumption doesn't seem to make an engine wear out quickly.
