does anybody remember these and did they ever use them and were there any funny tales to tell asa a result?
i used to carry one in its "baco foil" tube but never got to use it....................thankfully?

on about they were like clingfilm and were fastened between the "a" posts and then the doors were shut ,oh and before laminated glass was standard fit)

I carried one and never used it. In the days when I was doing 50k miles a year and toughened screens shattered easily.
I recall one day when I had three screens installed on a single journey from Hull to Colchester. One on the M18, one on the A1 near Grantham and one on the A12 near Marks Tay. A long and tiresome day.

Normal toughened glass breaks very easily, You can punch through it easily too, See it done, First strike & straight through with no blood or damage to the person doing the punching.

1st one was a stone, I saw it coming towards me in slow motion.
2nd one may have have resulted from a poor install at the side of the road, leaving the glass stressed.
3rd one, not sure, probably another stone.
Have a look at your laminated screen and see the tiny chips - go back quite a few years to toughened screens and 50% of those tiny chips could be a broken screen.

Punching a hole in the screen was not the right thing to do. It usually resulted in the screen becoming unstable and the chance of all of it landing in your lap. (most of it found its way into the heater ducts in order to spit bits out at you years later)
The central part of the screen was toughened to a different temperature, and crazed into larger parts so you could see through it, and hence no need to punch a hole in it.

your talking rubbish ive had so many scrap cars go through my hands over the years that i have tried every technique going to see how tough toughened glass is and on a side window set in rubber its very tough,absolutely no way can you put your fist through it.........

Rather than being rude with your reply and potentially getting the person's back up to who you're addressing it to, it would be far better to say something along the lines of "sorry, but I disagree with you". Before the days of laminated windscreens, if they were impacted by a stone (for example) rather than just cracking in one place, they would frost completely all over and impair your vision. As an emergency measure you punch a hole in the windscreen so you can see where you're going and more importantly come to a stop without driving into the back of someone.

Toughened screens were about 4 times stonger than laminated glass, by that I mean, the amount of effort required to break the screen. With a toughened screen you could (and needed to in some cases) literally put you knee in the middle of the screen and bend it into position, try that with a laminated screen and it will crack top to bottom.
The sixe of stone impact required to shatter a toughened screen is a lot bigger than the stone required to chip a laminated screen, but or course if a laminated screen is damaged the car is still driveable.
The area in the middle of the old toughened screen that has larger sections of glass to make it still useable whe shattered ( that TVM refered to)is called the Zebara Zone.

The ones I had (and used) had vertical aluminium reinforcing rods perhaps three inches apart, came rolled up in a plastic envelope, and were a lot tougher than clingfilm. You could go like stink with them!
