Golf 1.9tdi sport - noisy or neurotic? - PoloGirl
I've had my Golf now for ten days and 800 miles. Over the weekend, after his first long trip (140 miles), I noticed that he seems to be quite loud and clattery when idling. I've checked the oil as I know they can use up quite a bit when brand new and may need topping up, but it's fine.

I think it may be that I'm comparing my Golf to my partner's Accord diesel, which he says have a reputation for being quiet diesels, and his is certainly far less noisy than mine. It seems to have got louder than it was when I first got it and it's embarassingly loud, like a tractor...not what I'd expect from a brand new car, despite it being a diesel. Am I being neurotic or should I get it checked?

Secondly, when I turn the engine off there is often a gdunkgdunkgdunk sound from the engine. I've never had a car with air con before - is this just the fan slowing down or something?

I'm not really this stupid, honestly...just a tad over-protective of my new car maybe!

The VW Pd diesel engine have always been a bit unrefined so if your comparing it to the accord diesel then it will sound a bit agricultural.

I wouldn't worry unduly, but I think I would make the effort of pulling into the next dealership I saw and getting them to have a listen.

The 1.9 is agricultural against the Honda - different injection technologies. It will get quieter over time, remember the engine is still bedding in, but it won't ever be really quiet. Give it 10,000 miles to loosen up. The other noise is probably the aircon shutting down. I'd leave it running, pop the bonnet, turn off and have a listen.

I got my new Octavia estate last Thursday and can confirm the 1.9 diesel is noisy, but having put on 1400 miles it seems to be loosening up a bit already

The funny noise is the air conditioning doing .....stuff

Diesel = Taxi ...... enough said. (although the Honda is the quietest I've ever heard on cold start).

Even BM's aren't too quiet on start !

The 1.9TDi is not as refined as some other diesels (though comparing to Honda Accord, by all accounts, is a very tough test), but I wouldn't describe it as a tractor (but I am used to TDis)! Neither do I recognise your 'gdunkgdunk' noise (hope that doesn't put the Murry Walker curse on mine!).

My car used just a litre of oil in its first 9000 miles (though my Audi 80TDi and 97 110TDi Passat both used a lot more from new).
As No FM2R suggests, if you are worried, pop back to the dealer for them to have a listen.

We have a couple of Golf TDI PD's in the family and they both sound a bit ropey on tickover. As does a mate's Passat TDI. As others have said, these aren't particularly refined engines particularly by Honda standards. To be fair, the same would apply to most diesels.

It's a lease car. Drive it till it breaks, then ask for another one :-))

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

As many other people have said, the 1.9PD engine is now noisier in comparison with some of the latest 'state of the art' diesels. However they do need about 10K miles to settle down and bed in and then they are not too bad.
When PD came along we were comparing them to old direct injection diesels, in this case they were much quieter from cold and hot, but things have moved on with common-rail etc. However take comfort in the fact that the PD unit is still probably the most fuel-efficient diesel around.

I seem to remember that when you were choosing a car those that said Focus etc were shot down in flames because you had set your heart on a VAG group product or a Honda however it is true to say that a Golf 1.9TDi is one of the least refined diesels in it's class.

The positive aspect of this is that there is almost certainly nothing wrong with your Golf, it will probably get a little quieter with miles and be a gutsy performer, fairly economical and the MkV Golf chassis is pretty good on the twisties.

My mate had the 1.9 TDi 130 in his 53 plate Ibiza. (Presumably the same one).

Had 30 odd thousand miles on - went quick enough but sounded very clattery when you were stopped - moreso with the window open.

Cheddar - I don't know why you didn't just type: "I told you so." It would have taken you less time to type and me even less time to read.

I'm still glad I chose the Golf. The build quality and the car overall is better than any Focus or Civic I had looked at. I love it in every other way, and the Accord can't be that good apart from being quieter (and cooler - see the aircon thread) because my partner would gladly swap! ;)

Yes I could have done though I wanted to be rather more constructive than that hence "The positive aspect of this is ............ " etc. I.e. to reassure you that there is nothing wrong.

It's funny that - because I too love the Golf but drive an Accord.
The choice was between the GTI or the Type S.
When it came down to it I just could not trust the VW dealers anymore to fix any possible problems.

My wife owns a Corolla and in all honesty I do not think it is any better than my previous Golf - it's just that when ever there has been a problem the dealers have been very good at fixing things - they bend over backwards to try and help.
My experience of the VW dealers is they spend the first 10 minutes of the conversation telling you it's not a problem and is a characteristic of the car.
Once you finally get them to have it back for a day, it then comes back - unable to trace fault.
Sound familiar ?
Still I probably digress from your original thread subject.

I had a 110 TDI A4: I thought it was noisy and unrefined.
I test drove a 1.9tdi Golf sport and found it much worse: in fact sitting at traffic lights in town with the window open it set my teeth on edge.

Mechanical refinement? Smoothness? Forget it. More like a bag of nails.

It would have driven me mad with the clatter and coarseness.

Not for me: a retrograde step in a driving experience I do not wish to repeat - ever.
