Depends what "recently" means.

130 on the bike's speedo yesterday (so probably nearer 120 or so actual) and a mere 80 in the Volvo today, but 158 on the GPS (so almost certainly pretty close to accurate, with the speedo off the top of the 160mph clock) when driving the Volvo through Germany to the Czech Republic last summer.

My earlier post states the fastest I've recently driven and ridden, but missed the fastest I've ever been, which was actually pillion on a Honda Blackbird; 178MPH on the clock - no I couldn't see it for myself! - on the A11 dual carriageway between Wymondham and Norwich. Getting there was totally without drama and involved pure, relentless acceleration that didn't start to tail off until the thick end of one sixty. Hard to describe unless experienced and an impressive demonstration of modern bike engineering. Having slowed down to sixty or so - below the limit - about thirty seconds later we saw a police Subaru in the rear view mirrors, parked on a slip road from a bridge so out of sight until passed. Ahem; rather lucky.

I grew up in Brunstrom's patch - and (touch wood) my licence has always been clean. I'm quite heavy on the right-foot sometimes too. Cameras are unforgiving - but my experience of traffic cops is that they're decent enough chaps who apply common sense to the majority of ciscumstances. I've seen 160mph on my Yamaha R6, it will go a little more but the corner at the end of the straight bit presents a problem. This of course is on my private 'ahem' test track that looks remarkably similar to a b-road not so far from me. The 7 was running a tooth smaller front sprocket which lowered the gearing. The speedo drive came off the front wheel though, so the speedo reading would have stayed the same.

It didn't half fly off the line though! :o))

This was on a "private" dual carriageway at 3am between two junctions with no over bridges, plod ramps or hard shoulder. I held it for maybe 20 seconds and then bottled it and backed off.

The bike should max out at a genuine 165 - I reckon allowing for speedo optimism I was probably doing 145-150 tops, but the only way it was going any faster was if a 7th gear appeared by magic. No more revs to play with.

Cheers

Have I got it wrong or does a smaller front sprocket raise the gearing.

Smaller front sprocket lowers the gearing (as does a bigger back sprocket).

Think of the derailleur gears on a pushbike. 1st gear is the smallest sprocket on front and biggest sprocket on back.

I have to question the usefullness of such a thread and the veracity of the contents contained therein.

However the fastest that I have ever been driven i.e. by someone else and in their car, was about 120 mph and that was in a BMW 5 series (the ones before Bangle ruined the shape of them).

I've never exceeded a true 100mph in any car that I've owned - just don't feel safe on our crowded roads and as I don't really 'do' Motorways then I wouldn't find the opportunity, would I?

It isn't the maximum speed you hit, it's the average rate you cover the ground. On empty A roads one can make very satisfactory progress in the small hours without reaching excessive speeds, although a small margin of illegality is then comfortable and well worth maintaining. Indeed with the right sort of weekday traffic - white vans and hustling commuters - it's possible to do this in daylight too, although spoiling tactics by aggressive mimsers can always ruin it.
Fastest you've driven - recently - aaflyer
Oh, 74mph in my Punto. That's the fastest - ever!

It's marked to 110 (laughable, since the published top speed is 103), but over 70 it feels like it's coming apart and the steering goes worryingly light! I think to get it to 103 we need to consider dumping it out the back of a Herc at 5000ft and measuring velocity (come on, Top Gear, could be an idea for next season...)

As for all these speeds quoted by other back roomers:

(i) Is there the possibility of the fisherman and his fish story, ie the size/speed increases with each telling...;
(ii) Stop boasting and think about the stupidity of some of your speeds /actions on others. Ok. many will say on empty road, etc., but what about your families when they get the call or knock on the door to say that you are in 5 bits on a mortuary slab...

Probably about 90 in the car and perhaps 95 on the bike recently.

As per DP I had a ZX7R which I sold last year, it had a full titanium Akrapovic, jetted and carb mods etc, OZ racing wheels, a factory RR Kawasaki single seat ets etc etc, on std gearing it would probaly have pulled 180 though I reckon I did 110 max on these camera ridden roads, I enjoyed the acceleration (and noise) at lower speeds and the sublime handling. The fastest I have done on a bike was an indicated 145 on my FZR600 about 15 years ago, I was on the redline in 5th just changing to 6th on the A3 between Cobham and Guildford before coming up to a rather tight (for a three lane dual carriageway) bend, going by the rev counter it was a genuine 140.

I have done over 125 in my modded Dolomite Sprint, around 130 on the Lotus, Hethel test track in an Elise, in addition to the bikes I have had various cars capable of 130 to 140 ish though have never had the opportunity to max them, when on the continent and on suitable roads I have had the kids on board so would not risk it. The only exception being a 1996 Vectra SRi 2.0 across Belgium into Germany, lovely crisp engine, would sit all day at an indicated 125mph and pull over 130 with ease.

Fastest you've driven - recently - cheddar
Intersting the last two posts, a 5 speed TDCi 130 is geard at about 31mph per 1000 rpm so at 125mph is pulling about 4100 rpm just where the power is starting to drop off, a 6 Speed is however geared to 35 mph per 1000 which makes it rather less responsive at normal speeds though does enable it to pull 130 though top gear is really too high IMO and was done for Co2 and Bik reasons.

With it's extra power the 2.2 155, also geared at around 35mph per 1000 rpm, would need to pull around 4200 rpm in top to do a genuine 145.

Intersting the difference that as little as 4mph / 1000 makes at those sort of speeds.

Probably not standard! although it could be a 940/960 those were RWD. The quoted 8 sec @ 155 surely that can't be a 1/4 mile time?
Fastest you've driven - recently - Orson {P}
Hmmm - see what you're saying. Couldn't believe how fast it was though - really responsive and off at any speed. 3rd was poor though - need 4th just as you do a "normal" overtake at 65 or so - redlines at about 65 in 3rd. Quite happy going past in 4th though. 6th was really only motorway.

Shame though - I've had 2 days in the 6 speed ST, and now onto a 1.4 Pug diesel, and a rice pudding could pull the skin off it (well, the rice pudding in the canteen anyway!)

Yup, I remember mine well. I had an indicated 130 a couple of times, but it was such a lovely engine to use. Great throttle response, a lovely growl, and would just zip round to the redline with no feeling of inertia or even a trace of harshness.

Did this with just 8 valves, one cam and primitve fuel injection too. A wonderful engine that still makes me question how much of the current multivalve obsession is for marketing rather than engineering reasons.

Would have kept it longer if it hadn't been totalled by an uninsured driver (while insured TPF&T). Grrr...

With the greatest respect guys this is really a reflection on the optimism of 80's Vauxhall speedos rather than a 115 bhp 1.8 brick being able to do a genuine 130. A 1996 2.0 Vectra SRI with 136 BHP, much better aero and ideal gearing would "only" pull 128 to 130 in road tests.
