Astra engine compartment valeting - plonker
I have recently bought a 2001 Astra 1.6 and I would like to titivate the engine compartment. Generally it's not bad under the bonnet, with the exception of the air inlet duct which I guess is an Al alloy casting. This has oxidised, or whatever, and now has a grey, sugary appearance. Does anyone have any idea how this may be smartened up?

this must be one of the most water hating cars known to man,i suggest if car running fine shut the bonnet and ignore, failing that take the rocker cover off take to local engineering shop get them to bead blast it for you and then you can paint it any colour you like...dont forget new vauxhall gasket, it might be a lazzy band on this model so make sure you fit it right first time...

Thanks oldman - the rocker cover is OK. The thing I mean lies behind that and parallel with it.

right you mean the air inlet thats made of ali ,if i wanted to make that tidy i would blast it with some brake cleaner and a good rag to rub it with to get the "fuzziness off"
make sure engine not running mind and watch the alternator doesnt get any etc......

"a very very expensive place....." I only find it expensive because I can't resist all those wonderful things you don't see anywhere else - home plating kits for example!

Wonder Wheels wheel cleaner is excellent at brightening aluminium and aluminium alloys. It's the phosphoric acid in it or something, it tarnished steel though, so use a cloth or brush it on carefull and leave it to dissolve the oxide before thoroughly rinsing off, don't leave it to soak on steel nuts and bolts etc...!
. You can also buy aluminium brighteners from places like Frost.
