We were driving home the other night when someone came haring over the white line on a country road and smacked into our mirror, smashing the glass and housing. Took them over 100 yards to stop, but as soon as our car started to reverse they floored it and by the time we had gotten the car turned, they were long gone. Too dark to see anything other than their lights, no way of identifying them.

Dealer price to supply and fit a new mirror is £195 (£60 labour), which feels a bit steep overall. My own trusted mechanic should be able to do the fitting for less than the dealer labour rate. No point in claiming off insurance as I have a £100 excess on my policy and in any case I'm a few weeks from being able to protect a full NCB. The car is a 2001 Seat Leon SE (2002 model year), the mirror is body-coloured and electric folding/moving/heated. Have tried ebay but haven't found my mirror (ie one that not only fits a Leon, but whose shape is a match for the one on the other side). GSF say they only stock the manual ones, not electric. Any suggestions for alternative suppliers for the mirror itself?

A Scrappie? There are some nationwide ones thru whom you can put in a request for a part and suppliers respond with their details and price. I was going to suggest GSF but I see you have already looked there!

Can you fit manual mirrors to both sides? If you dont make adjustments frequently it may be a cost effective option. They will still match each other and it is unlikely that a future purchaser will ever notice.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I find the electric ones very useful as we both drive the car and it's easier to return mirrors to my preferred position electronically - also, handy for reverse parking in tight spots to see how close the kerb/obstruction might be to either side of the car. Demisting feature is also something I would prefer to keep for wintertime - has come in handy many times, a good safety feature in my opinion.

Tried my local scrappie that specialises in VAG cars, no joy there. Also tried searching on ebay for Leon mirror, Leon door mirror, Leon electric mirror etc and although I got some results, the ones that came up are sort of teardrop shaped (or else blingtastic), whereas mine is more rectangular than that. Any links for carbreakers that operate/deliver nationwide?

It might be worth trying to find out what they cost in Spain. I think that some of our BR friends are located there or perhaps you may have a relative or friend going on holiday. At Ryanair prices it could even be worth going there yourself to pick it up (any excuse for a holiday).
