It has just happened to me. I filled up Toad with Optimax at exactly one pound per litre; that is £4.56 per gallon; the next step is the £5 gallon, I suppose. (Is that why they do not allow us to see gallons, to disguise the true disgraceful price?)

Toad had an nice outing today, but it takes some of the fun out of blowing at 16psi wondering about the mpg and hoping that is at least in double figures.

The funny thing was, we were run into by a sheep. Here was this silly animal capering in the road, egged on by some colleagues on the proper side of the fence. So we just stopped dead, to let things sort themselves out. It was not expected that the creature would leap in the air and then run into us, as happened, before it ran down the side of the car to the rear; whereupon we withdrew rapidly before worse happened. No damage.

Alice had her first tank of non-super for many months yesterday because I baulked at the 103.9p per litre cost. Silly really, as the increase in mpg makes it work out as pretty much the same overall cost anyway, but it still looked too expensive.

I think it's worth making sure everyone knows that if sheep are in the road they will ALWAYS do the stupid thing, or at least the opposite of what you expect. And whatever you do, NEVER blow the horn at them if you value your bodywork!

Typical sheep behaviour. When confronted with a narrow area through which they have to run (e.g. gateway), a proportion will always jump in the air, as if to clear some imaginary trip-wire.

During my Naval career I did several tours of duty in the Falkland Islands which, for those of you who don't know, has a huge sheep population. One of the first things we were told when arriving, is if there is any likelihood of a collision between a military vehicle and a sheep then the vehicle driver must avoid it all costs. Even if it meant driving into one off the deep storm ditches alongside the road and writing off the vehicle. Apparently the compensation that had to be paid to the farmer for the dead sheep far exceeded the value of the vehicle.

Have to remeber that petrol is actually around 20 odd pence a litre. Its the lovely Gordon who makes a pile on the duty etc. I'm not sure of the exact figures though perhaps someone in here is. I suppose someone has to pay for the country and I would be the first to moan if services were getting cut all the time.

Yet when you look at an itemised fuel receipt, under "Tax" it simply shows the VAT amount.

The textbook definition of dishonesty.

Having read the link about the tax on fuel I have difficulty getting my head around the fact that we are being charged VAT on the Excise duty . So we are paying tax on a tax . I wouldn't have thought that was legal but they got special rules and how could an individual challenge it. ...Keo...

Spare a thought for my friend with a twin Volvo engined speedboat.

400 litre tank = £380 something to fill up and he gets all of 1.6mpg at 40 knots......

On the bright side , as far as I know his boat has not been hit by any sheep ....
