HI there,
Over the past 3 weeks my catalytic converter has started making a rattly sound from around tickover to 2000 rpm. I have checked for any thing loose externally and found nothing. Started engine and put my ear to it and the noise is coming from inside. CAT works fine, sailed through MOT month before. My dad says it is a loose baffle, it is so annoying and town driving is so embarrasing :-(
Any ideas how to stop noise, can it be repaired? I really dont want buy a new CAT just because of a noise. If not I will have to live with it.
Please let me know either way.

Not much you can do with it!
Best advise is to have a new 1 fitted but I understand the real world too and as long as engine performance/behaviour is not affected then carry on as you are with the noise.
But just beware a blocked cat or broken insides of a cat can potentially cause blockage etc further down the system if bits move!

Drill a hole into it so that you make contact with the honeycomb ceramic part inside, then screw a big self tapping screw into so that it holds the ceramic piece still. This should cure the rattling as it is normally the whole honeycomb of ceramic that becomes loose and causes them to rattle. I haven't tried this method myself, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. And nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Self tapping screws are a bad idea,they promote corrosion and you get a fast leak so you are better off either doing nothing or replace cat!

Had a similar problem on a SEAT Toledo TDI. A small piece of the honeycombe structure had broken off and was moving(rattling) whenever I applied the accelerator at low RPM(1250-2000). Got a new one from B&M Exhausts in Mansfield, Notts £80 fitted. Doesn't look the same quality but £80.

We use BM Cats as well, never had a warranty issue. Good quality replacement parts & a huge range to boot.

Correct, they will promote corrosion in the exhaust cat but if its already broken then its not really a problem. It will give it another good few months or maybe a year or so before replacement is necessary. Why put a new one on now if you don't have to?
