Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg having not more than 8 passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg. Combinations of towing vehicles in category B and a trailer, where the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3500kg and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

I think it's the rubbish like that on the DVLA website that explains why the original poster was confused.
Essentially, you'll need to take an additional test to tow anything bigger than an itty-bitty little trailer.

OK, reading the rules for most eventualities:
You can tow a trailer, so long as it does not exceed the weight of the vehicle you are driving. If the total weight of car and trailer exceeds 3,500 kg then the trailer can not weigh more than 750 kg.

So if I had a trailer weighing 1700 kg I could tow it with a car weighing 1700 kg but not with one weighing 2000kg?
If my car weighed 2751 kg I could only tow a 750 kg trailer?
Or perhaps I have totally misunderstood............?????
