I had a strange occurrence on Saturday. I drove the car (2000X 1.9TDi 115, 71k) to friends for a world cup/birthday party, and got caught in some heavyish traffic in temps of 31degC. Occasionally the car would shudder and I could feel severe ?wobble? through the gearstick. When I pulled up at friends? house with the driver?s window down I could hear a loud hammering noise from the engine compartment!
At all times the gauges read normal, and the next morning the car started and ran normally.
I suspect it may be related to the heat that afternoon, as the climate control seemed to be working quite hard.
Any ideas as to what it could have been and what I should do about it?

MAYBE dual mass flywheel, I'm not an expert but the way you specifically mentioned gearstick made that come to mind.
If these let go it's new gearbox time from what I've read. Best get it checked out.

I had the exact same problem. My L reg Audi 80 2.0E (115K) clutch pedal and gear stick started shaking when taking clutch up in M'Way traffic jam. Pulled down to hard shoulder for 20 mins to let cool down. Never did it again. My dad said clutch was getting to hot.

That would be clutch judder which does happen when clutches get hot.
From what the OP has said, it was doing while in neutral or with the clutch disengaged.

If it did it when clutch was up (i.e. nothing to do with clutch judder) then I too would suspect the dual mass f/wheel. If it does it again then get it looked at ASAP.

Sticking with the "hot day" theme; could this noise have been from the air-con compressor? These suffer a well-known fault with the electric clutch on the pump breaking it's rivets and eventually falling right off.

Yes, but note he says the car is shuddering and the gear lever wobbling. I'm doubtful that a sick A/C compressor would have quite that much effect.

I did consider that point; engine vibration is just possible, particularly if the compressor clutch was flicking in and out. [The hammering noise.] It is more than likely to be another D/M flywheel on the way out; but that won't be as easy to check as a loose clutch plate on the pump.

The car has been running perfectly for the last two days, though I haven't been caught in any slow-moving traffic. The climate control does seem to be working hard (high fan speed) when it's hot outside (30 deg) and it's set to auto.
I'll see if my local garage can give it a once over.
