If a turbo fails (blows a seal, I presume) and pretty much all of the engine oil gets spat through the hot exhaust causing a BIG smokscreen on the M62 for example, what other components could have been damaged in the process?
Cat/Pre-cat? Intercooler? Exhaust?
It's not been driven since, only to get it off and onto the flatbed and a subsequent recovery driver thought it would be a good idea to drive it 200 yards down the road to try and load it onto his dolly.
It took 2 litres of oil to get the level back into the allowed dipstick range (but this was AFTER it had been driven the 200 yards).
It's a diesel, by the way.

At least all this damage. You are lucky the engine didn't start guzzling its own sump oil to destruction. Then it would be a new engine as well.

What I basically need is a list of things which I want them to check and confirm that they have not been damaged by the sudden oil loss through the exhaust.
I'm not paying for the repair, it's under warranty, even though the turbo was only changed about two weeks ago. I don't know for DEFINITE that it was changed. Or itf it was, it could have been changed for a recon unit.

Can answer specifically with regard to the intercooler. You need to get it taken off the car and thoroughly cleaned out to ensure there are no bits of turbo left in there, otherwise they may get sucked straight back in to a new turbo. This is *fact* and not just supposition!!

It's a 2002 Volvo S40 1.9D which as you may or may not know, is fitted with a Renault DCi engine which has the oft-mentioned dodgy EGR valve.
It's done nearly 65000 miles and has always been serviced by Volvo, and on time.

I know about dieseling and it wasn't doing that, thank god!
It just lost ALL power with a HUGE cloud of smoke behind me and I rolled to a halt on the hard shoulder where I turned the engine off and it turned off straight away.

Don't forget there are two sides to a turbo, and failure of seals in the different sides has different effects. Failure of the inlet side seal will put the oil through the engine where it will be partially burnt and contaminate the intercooler and pipework (blue smoke screen). Failuer of the exhaust side seal will just put the oil out of the exhaust (making a white smoke screen of vaporised oil). Provided the engine maintained oil pressure no damage should have been done to the bottom end or camshaft in the short distance involved.
Either way the cat will be oiled up, but as it's not actually required on a diesel engine, I wouldn't worry too much about it - it will probably smoke for the first few miles though.....
