Next car will be a Bora but I need good economy because the company I work for are tight with the expenses.Has any body got actual experience of real world MPG of a 1600 petrol.A TDi would be nice but it is just the thought of the govt' ripping us off so much with the silly price of diesel.

Go for the TDi, you have to try hard to get any less than 50mpg( Mid to late fifties on a run).

Just jumped into a 1.6 petrol Golf hire car while my diesel car is getting serviced and its like the stone age.
The Golf feels a bit lighter around town, but anywhere else it is hard work and you have to hang on to every gear to feel the same sense of momentum as a diesel
The economy is also a bonus with a diesel

I have a 1.6 Bora SE with the 100PS petrol engine, which came up out of the blue about three years ago at a price that was just too tempting to miss out on (pal runs a used car business from his home since selling his retail outlet and only deals with top notch vehicles).
It's a heavy car but pulls well even in fifth from about 20mph - average fuel consumption works out at 40.9mph on a run and, around town, about 32-34mpg.
But I would still have preferred a diesel version...:-)

The Vento is too heavy for the 1.6 IMO. Better as a 2.0 petrol. Although I would have the TDi anyday.
Shame it looks so dire but then that's why it's cheaper.

We have a 1999 1.6 petrol Bora and the previous car was a year 2000 Seat Toledo (same car basically) with a 110 TDI engine. The TDI flew when it was running properly but I hated it - noisy and unrefined but good mpg obviously. With our current Bora, the engines sounds like a sewing machine and we get about 32 round town, 40 on a run. Its not a car for motorway blasts or a car with loads of power but for a nice simple everyday car that gives no hassle - its great! For a 1.6 though, its really nippy. The Boras got 45k on clock and the TDI had 95k. I know diesels are great, fast, economical but I love the fact that the petrol is whisper quiet. Unless I can afford a newish low mileage diesel, I'm not going bak to them.
btw the Bora compared to the Golf gives a far superior ride...........

The Vento is the model before the Bora; it replaced the Jetta big bumper model from 1992 to the late 1990s.
