rover diesel cooling problem - 96punto
I have a 1993 rover 218sld diesel which is using a lot of water. After a couple of minutes running the water is boiling out of the overflow pipe on the expansion tank and continues to boil until the tank is empty. Any suggestions on what the problem could be would be appreciated - thanks.

sounds like the thermostat has gone.it is possible the head gasket is causing it but would check stat out first

i would go for the headgasket im afraid, any decent garage will confirm the correct diagnosis if you have one locally?

I would go for stat, hardy engines on these and dont really have much in the way H/g failure but oldman is correct in saying get it checked out in local garage ie get the expansion tank sniffed at mot station this will confirm if H/g failure

218 is the 1.7l XUD Pug / Cit engine. My money is on HG failure. I think in the Rover the engine is not inclined backwards so much, so getting the head off should be less awkward.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

With regards to the termostat, would it be a big job to replace it - could I pick one up from a scrap yard and have a go myself? Also what do you mean by having the expansion tank "sniffed"?

Thanks.

Re: thermostat. I wouldn't bother with a scrapyard for one. Go buy a newone , they're not expensive.

By "expansion tank sniffed" he means getting a garage to test for hydrocarbons (HC) in the coolant using a gas analyser to see if exhaust gasses are present, which will confirm whether your head gasket is leaking or not.
