I'm thinking of buying a '06 Vectra 1.8 VVT, what is the opinion of you guys on this model?

5th, maybe 6th best in class.
Obviously the owners will say its wonderful becuase admitting spending £15k or whatever on something that is easily outclassed by most of its rivals isn't an easy thing to do.
Test drive the entire class - you won't then buy the Vectra.

Spending that amount of money on a large car - I'd go for an Avensis or something else better than the Vectra. Too much money to throw into GM's black hole of debt!

If I had the money, I would replace my vectra.b with the C model without hessitation.

At least this current Vectra & all the new Vauxhalls are galvenised unlike stuff from Ford.
Ford are well behind in the rust proofing aera.

My mother has a 1999 Vectra and it consistently gives a big problem each year, usually costing about £300 to fix. The current ongoing problem requires a complete new ABS system (not just sensors), which will cost a fortune. The last trivial problem was the bulb blew in the remote stereo display/thermometer, which required removal of the dashboard to replace (£100 job). As honestjohn himself says...."I cannot recommend these cars".

But you're basing your opinion on one troublesome car out of millions that were sold. Just because one car is a "Friday afternoon" one, doesn't mean that all of them are like that.

I personally think the 1.8 petrol will be a bit slow. Go for the 2.2 petrol for more refinement or the 1.9CDTi (150) for performance and economy.
Beware the SRi spec gives a crashy ride on bad roads due to 17" wheels and lowered suspension. The Design spec is probably a good compromise

Unless we're talking £12,000 worth here, I'd be hesitant. I assume you intend to run it for a while, as otherwise the depreciation will be an absolute waste. I don't dislike the Vectra, though I do prefer the Mondeo it's a matter of personal preference.
It really depends on what it's being offered at, but I really wouldn't spend more than £12,000 of my own cash on any car in the D-segment - not a prob if this is co. car of course. I would recommend you test out the opposition, and if you're talking about spending £15,000 (of your own money), then maybe look to a nearly-new (supermarket-sourced?) Accord 2.0VTEC, Passat 1.6FSi/2.0FSi or Avensis 1.8VVTi.
I imagine with the facelifted Avensis imminent you'll find a very good deal on the latter, and all depreciate much less than the Vectra.

I got a new pre-reg vectra gsi for £14,500, it was just before they introduced the "new shape" but even so... Shop around. It is very hard to justify buying new when you can get nearly new for such a large discount.

Never thought much of the Vectra (personally always preferred the Mondeo) until a work colleague got himself a 2004 SRi with the "old" 2.2 DTi engine. He bought it as an four month old ex demo, fully loaded (as they always are) and less than 3,000 miles on the clock for about 13k.
Now done 60k and reliable as clockwork. Very nicely made, very refined, does 48 mpg and goes like stink. Great motorway car, which is why he bought it (30k a year, 28 of which are on the three lane stuff)
Perfectly competent and well put together car in my opinion.

I would agree with that DP. I have done 30,000 and no problems at all. I also like the enormous boot space - I've seen smaller hotel rooms.
