Remember this is a motoring forum? - Imagos
Somewhat dismayed with the posts in here just lately which seem to critisize endlessly various car companies products in particular Ford and Volkswagen.

Surely we all come to the backroom 'cos we love cars?

I do have issues with some cars but i'm very reluctant to critisize them as I still get enourmous pleasure driving them and sometimes their faults are part of the charm.

Gilles Villenueve once said to Enzo Ferrari after a test in a F1 car "the cars rubbish.. absolutly terrible but i'll drive it all day and love every minute of it" That's why Gilles was Enzo's favourite F1 driver out of all of the Ferrari drivers

Can't we have the same view in here?

If you paid me several million dollars a year, I?d drive all day and love every minute. If my car was attended by twenty mechanics and only had to last one race instead of ten years. If I hadn?t spent a year?s salary on it. If I could park it without fear of it being ticketed or clamped...

People who rubbish cars do so because they care and are passionate about motoring. I do anyway. If I wasnt passionate about it I wouldnt be bothered to be here.

Anyway. I have a VW. That by any stretch of the imagination gives me the right to rubbish it if I so wish. After all no-one is better qualified to rubbish a car than its owner or previous owner.

I don't 'love' cars, they just interest me. So all opinions are worth hearing.
Remember this is a motoring forum? - Happy Blue!
It is certainly a waste of breathe (so to speak) to criticise cars of which one has had no experience. But where one has some knowledge, criticism is useful. Also, to complain that say, all Vauxhalls are rubbish, becuase your Dad had a bad one in 1968 is silly.

Mind you, I'd never buy a French car!

I like the fact that people on here have opinions about cars. The thing that posters seem to neglect is that other contributors have valid opinions, too. It's easy to forget that people are basically rational and are unlikely to say that a Citroen is a good car unless they have some reason for so doing.

The one thing that keeps me from posting more often in here is the sheer rudeness of some of the comments I see on the forum. I try to consider whether I'd say something to someone's face before I post it. I suspect many people don't. That can then come across as objectionable slagging off of other people's opinions, which is where I guess the OP came in.

I read the forums every single day and have read some great stuff on here, advice, funny story's etc. I don't post very often because one particular regular member of the forums infurates me to point where I actually want to meet him and fight! but thats the beauty of this place we all have different opinions and most of the stuff is good natured banter. Keep it I say it's never been better :)

In the spirit of this discussion, I have to say I don't agree with that statement at all.

IMO some people buy a, say, Citroen and will defend their choice even when they know they have bought a lemon. Reason? - Need to justify their decision, Loss of face, need to convince themselves, loyalty, etc etc. In fact I would go so far as to say that in this area many are totally un-objective.

P.S.
Not a anti-Citroen thread, and my Lada is really great!
Remember this is a motoring forum? - Citroënian {P}
For balance, can I point out that Citroën don't hold an exclusive right to building lemons.

VAG, Ford, Mercedes, BMW, Vauxhall, Kia, Alfa, Toyota, Renault, &tc all build lemons too.

Unless we live in a world where your only motoring choice is a Trabant, people will have different reasons and opinions as to why they buy particular cars.

And because there is variety and choice and opinions, there's something to talk about here.

All Japanese cars are rubbish though.

I should point out I mentioned Citroens merely as an example. The point is that people who post saying they are good are rational human beings, so it's probably best to assume there's some truth in what they are saying.

People come on here for advice on maintenance and financial issues, to discuss motoring occurences and driving behaviour, etc., so we clearly don't all 'love' cars, which is fair enough.

But it amuses me when people make the effort to state things on a motoring forum like, "cars are just a means of getting from A to B", "how can people get exited about cars?"
Its like me going on a football forum and saying, "I dont know why you lot get so excited about football, its only a game, why get so obsessed with it? Bit childish isn't it, getting so worked up about 11 men running around on a field?"

The word forum originates from the days of the Roman Empire, where forums were the main places of debate within their society. To enable this to take place, opinions were exchanged on a variety of topics.

I don't think it's right to ask someone to withhold a negative opinion so long as it has a basis in reality, especially as these could prevent someone from making a potential mistake. The only thing you could reasonably ask for is that negative opinions are delivered in a polite and respectful manner.

Actually ancient forums were public market places. People tended to congregate there, so they over time they developed into places for public meetings and discussion.

Many people spend a huge amount of time in cars, and a large amount of money buying and running them. Why shouldn't they complain about poor design, poor reliability and poor service if they experience it?

Unfortunately my experience of main dealers is that you can get better aftersales care after buying a faulty tin of beans than when buying a faulty car.

Meaning, how shall I put this, differently flavoured and priced cars, as with baked beans, from the same mighty product-mill? Grim visions of the present Aprilia let alone the future?

Totally agree.Plus getting feedback about existing models can help in descisions about whether to purchase that particular car.

I have to agree with the general opinion here. The reason why people rubbish cars or brands here is a symptom of their stating personal opinions and sometimes experiences of them.

Opinions and points of view are a basic entitlement to everyone. Some aired here are well argued, some are less so. However this forum is here because people do state and discuss.

It is I believe incumbant upon all of us here to use this forum wisely and offer valid points for discussion or as advice asked for by other members. Although I would not disable anyone's account for spouting complete rubbish that has no basis of fact attached to it (believe me I want to sometimes), I would hope and suspect that those people who make sweeping statements that cannot be backed up by them or others here would find themselves listened to rather less than the majority here who discuss, banter, argue a little, support each other, agree, disagree, and agree to disagree.

Going back to the OP, just because you like food doesnt mean you dont complain about a carp restaurant.

However I agree that unsubstantiated slagging off is unhelpful, instead a positive approach, reasoned argument, constructive critique presenting pros and cons etc is useful and relevant.

What I find tedious is the gratuitous use of the emotive words ?scam?, ?con? and ?rip off?, applied in all manner of circumstances, usually without any information being offered by way of justification for the use of the words. I would imagine that in most cases the price charged, and the description of the item or service being provided, would be readily available on request before the order was placed, giving the prospective customer a free choice of whether they wanted to accept or not.

I certainly agree with that. I also think that it is very easy to mislead on the internet and one needs to treat others opinions with that in mind, and also to reprsent your own with a little caution and be frank about actual knowledge/experince or WAG.

Other than that, I would think just about any opinion is valuable at some level, provided it doesn't monopolise.

Sometimes an irritating opinion can be tough to take, but it is just an opinion, its not life or death.
