Volvo S40: burning clutch smell? - skiddy2k
iv got a volvo s40, 'P 1996, 1.8 and was driving today when i realised that at a set of traffic lights, the car felt as if it was misfiring a bit...the revs felt as if they were falling and then going back to normal.

i drove on, cautiously, and found it difficult to put into second gear, it was tight and sticky. As i drove furthur, in 2nd and 3rd gear, the car felt sluggy as if it doesnt have wnough petrol in it, and it was choking(Although its on a full tank).

i got out of the car to check the oil level, just incase i had a sudden leak and their was no oil in the engine...but the oil level was fine.

went to smell the fumes from the exhause and it smelt as if my clutch had burnt out. it was a strong sharp smell.

if i switch the car on now, on idle, the exhaust sounds like its 'pattering and when i rev it, it sounds like a car with no fuel in it...chocking,misfiring.

can i be right in thinking this is the clutch? the car has done 66k

thanks in advance,
Skiddy

No its not the clutch, the clutch does not make the car misfire and it only smells when you are driving along.

"and their was no oil in the engine...but the oil level was fine."

was there oil in the engine or not?

Sounds like a collapsed Cat is blocking the exhaust. or a baffle has come loose and blocking it. Regards Peter

sorry, let me make it a bit clearer.

the oil level was full,

it is a possibility its a collapsed cat.

how would i go abouts getting this sorted? is it a matter of reclamping the cat to where its meant to be?

If it is a collapsed cat, you need a new one I'm afraid.
Volvo S40: burning clutch smell? - skiddy2k
is their anyway i can tell if its the cat or not?

would it be hanging loose?

Emmisions test at a good Indi garage. A full 4Gas will indicate if there is a problem. Mind you I would ahve expected the engine management light to come by now. Regards Peter

My cat broke up once and no-one believed my claims of loss of power, poor running and that kind of thing.

They did when it caught fire though. (The Engine Management light never even lit up!)

Engine management light or emissions light didnt come up on the display.

how much can i expect to pay to change this?

Depending what engine you've got, it could be anything from £150 (early S40 1.8 petrol) to £300 (turbo models), plus labour (doesn't take long to fit a Cat).

The fact that he could not get into gear and a sharp smell points directly to a clutch problem.

That doesn't sound like a clutch problem to me. If the clutch is knackered the usual sign, apart from the smell of the friction plate burning, is a lack of drive. If there's a difficulty getting the car into gear, that would make me think more towards the gearbox/linkages etc.

The smell could be the Cat, which also fits with the erratic running. If the problem is present while the car's in neutral, it's not the clutch.
