VW Passat TDI 130 power loss - New2TDI
Hi Guys,

I had the cambelt changed last week and I have noticed a real lack of power when accelerating. It can become quite dangerous at take off as there is no pull until after 2200 rpm and then the power quickly disappears after 3000rpm. Does anyone know when the turbo is supposed to kick in? I thought it was nearer the 1500rpm.

Also any ideas on what is going wrong. I have taken it back to garage once already and they said that they couldn?t find anything wrong but did agree that there was no power. I am taking it back tomorrow so they can check it again but I would like some ideas on what could be the cause before I go in.

Thanks

Note the car is a 2001 Passat sport with 120k on the clock

well assuming the power was there before, and is not now after the belt chnage the garage have screwed it up. Probably the timing is out.

That's what I am thinking. Please excuse the stupid question but is the tmiing adjusted manually or on these new engines is this done electronically?

TVM is refering to the cambelt timing. It will need to be adjusted manually - ie, the belt *could* be one tooth out on the pulleys, and thus will need taking off and the cam timing set up properly and the belt put back on again.

I had the same trouble with a Cortina Mk4, the cylinder head gasket was changed by a now defunct Ford dealer. Afterwards the car would not run properly, I took it back to the dealer several times to no effect. I took it to other garages who did not make it any better.
After 50000 miles I got a friend to change the cam belt, he asked me if there was a reason why the original belt was one tooth out. He put the new one on correctly, and the car went much better. It had been wrong for about 3 years, and no garage that I used could find the problem.

The point of this ramble is that my Passat is 5 years old, and from other threads it seems that the cam belt and idler pullies should be changed. The car goes so well now, and I just know that whatever garage does the job, it will never go as well again.

What should I do?

The "friend" has moved away unfortunately!

Try disconnecting the plug on the airflow meter with a flat bladed screwdriver. If it evens things out more, as in more power under 2000rpm but a less after than you have at the moment, then is is possibly the culprit due to using inferior parts from a large beleagured German electronics company.

There are two seperate issues here:

The cam needs to be timed correctly to the crankshaft and the fuel pump needs to be timed correctly to the crankshaft. Either could be out. Some VW diesels also need the fuel pump electronically adjusted because its timing needs to be more acurate the +/- 1 cambelt tooth.

"the fuel pump needs to be timed correctly to the crankshaft."
Not on a PD...No such adjustent.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As I said I am taking it back to the garage tomorrow and the first comment I'll make is to adjust the timing belt. I'll let you know what happens.

BTW how do you know if you need to adjust the timing +vely or -vely? Do they need to run some diagnostics or is it just trial and error?

There will be timing marks on all the pulleys that need to be lined up with timing marks on the cylinder block.

Just got a call from the garage and they say that the timing is spot on. Did notice some chaffing on one of the Turbo hoses so they replaced this but they said that this did not amke a difference. They now suspect the temperature sensor as gauge does not work. Not being to technically minded can somebody explain how this would effect the efficiency of the Turbo?

Money pit alarm!
Be very careful here and do not let the garage start changing things at random. If the performance was fine and the temperature gauge worked when you took the car in, the garage probably has caused the problems or are pulling a fast one.
Speak to someone senior in the garage and get your concerns directly to them before opening your wallet.
