VW Golf IV 1.6 Engine Codes - arnold2
A friends' Golf 1.6 (the 2-valve one, 2001 year) has a couple of dashboard warning lights up of engine error codes. Took it to nice local Skoda dealer who plugged it into their computer, and read the following fault codes:

17549 P1141
Which they marked up as 'load detection valve, sporadic' - a search on the Net calls it 'Load Calculation Cross Check Range/Performance'

17978 P1570
Which they marked up as 'Engine Control Unit, sporadic', again Net search came up with 'Contr.Module Locked'

17524 P1116
Which they marked up as 'Heather Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1, possible Lambda Probe' - Net search came up with 'O2 Sensor Heater Circ.,Bank1-Sensor1 Open'

Any idea what is causing these faults, and cure ? If it's the Lambda probe, I'm going to order it from GSF, as they are about 400% cheaper than VAG !!

Ignore 17978 for now; that one is often thrown-up during a code-read and clears when you start it. If it starts OK - then it's an old code anyway.

Code 17549 "load calculation - implausible value" is possibly a MAF sensor fault.

Code 17524 is fairly self-explanatory - the pre-cat oxygen sensor's heater coil has likely failed. This can be quickly confirmed using a continuity tester. It shouldn't have much effect on the running of the car.

Skoda garage reckons the Lambda Probe - could it be heater coil, too ?

Much the same thing. "Lambda probe" is jargon for an exhaust gas oxygen sensor. Most have a electric heater coil in them [a HEGO to be exact] to speed-up their reaching operating temp. Not a big issue for something sitting directly in the exhaust flow in our climate.

Cheap parts tend to be just that - cheap. Billions of pounds-worth of counterfeit parts around now; why buy more grief.
