Vectra-C ABS and Traction Control - Zippy123
I had to do an emergency stop yesterday in the dry in my 2.2l petrol 2004 Vectra. The car is fitted with traction control and abs.

What surprised me is that the wheels locked and there was some screeching of tyres before the car came to a stop.

I did not think ABS allowed the wheels to actually stop turning. Is there a fault?

I took the car to an empty factory car park and tried a few manouvers with it.

I found that the front wheels span if too much power was put through them - I thought traction control was supposed to stop that happening.

I also found that it was surprisingly easy to lock the wheels.

BTW the carpark good condition tarmac.

Is this expected behaviour or is the system faulty?

My 1997 2.0 vectra is the same, but I can turn during my 'Emergency Stops'. So it must be ok.The car also screeches when coming out of junctions in a hurry, but the TC quickly deals with it!

For ABS and traction control to work, first the wheels have to actually stop (ABS) or spin (traction control) for the sensors to detect what is going on.

ABS stops the wheels from totally locking up; but you will still get a very small amount of lock up (pulse braking).

TC does the opposite as it's using the same sensors. You will still get a small amount of wheel spin.

In short, IMHO, there is nothing wrong with your car.

Thanks guys.

Must admit I was impressed with the way it pulled up and saved a very nasty crash when someone went right across a t junction without looking.

I would have thought that activating the ABS would have produced a high frequency judder as the wheels went through a rapid cycle of alternately locking and rotating, and that this judder would have been noticeable. Was it?

Yes it did shudder.

Never felt deceleration like it.

Your Vectra will also have a system called Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

EBA is designed to detect such ?panic stops? and apply maximum braking effort within milliseconds ? quicker than the blink of an eye. It interprets braking behaviour by assessing the rate that the brake pedal is activated. If the system identifies an emergency it automatically initiates full braking faster than any driver can move their foot. Emergency stopping distances can be shortened, reducing the likelihood of accidents ? especially the common ?nose to tail? incident.
