Most economical- Jazz or Escort - vwdriver
Hi,

This summer I may be doing quite a lot of driving, mixture of motorway and country roads. I was just wondering which would be most economical to run a Honda Jazz 1.4 automatic or a 1.3 Escort. The Honda has a much more modern engine but the escort has very high gearing. Was just wondering everyone's opinion.

Thanks

Depends on the age of the Escort, but if its the old carb version of the ancient OHV engine and no cat, the AA say 45@ 70 and 44.5 overall. Whereas the Jazz (1.4 SE CVT-7) gets 37-38 @ 70 and 43 overall. On that basis, i'd say the Escort, but these are test figures, what kind of economy are you getting yourself from these two cars? Everyone else will probably come along and say there is more to it than just economy (and thus instruct you to go with the most comfort/reliability/performance...)

Probably not much in it as far as petrol consumption goes - but as the Escort must be at least 8 years old and the Jazz no more than 4, the risk of more repairs / breakdowns to the Escort surely negates any small economy advantage it might have.

Assuming that both cars are available to you, use the Jazz as much as you can.

forgot all about the escort 1300 ohv what a nice car and so much power, you cant beat its driving prowess either, now the alternative a little upstart jazzy thing mmmmmmmmmmmmm tricky one this no got to go with the jazz even if it does 10 mpg downhill with a tail wind of 10 knotts...........
is that any help?

I don't know about the Escort, but we have a Jazz CVT which my wife uses to commute to work - a 20 mile round trip. We get about 45 mpg overall on the trip computer.

I would thoroughly recommend the Jazz - easy to drive, exceptionally well built and very nippy.

It's a long time since I drove an Escort, but I remember it being very 'agricultural' - I was driving a Citroen GS at the time. I don't think you have to be that desperate to have to choose to buy an Escort!

My mum had a 1.3 Fiesta (same engine, possibly different gearing) and it struggled to see 40 mpg.

But yeah, what oldman says really.

I once read about 1.3 carb OHV engine in the old Escort, it was very tunable indeed, fit a sport cam in it & fiddle with the fuelling properly, its possible it can get the same performance as the XR3i!!

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

Thanks for all the responses so far, the escort is 1993 but its only done about 50k the jazz is an 03-reg with 13k miles. The Honda's got quite a good spec aircon, sunroof, cd player etc so its quite tempting. Also I've heard making the engine labour in a high gear uses more fuel. If I was in the escort going up an incline on the motorway would I be best to change down or just floor the accelerator in 5th?

Thanks

I hired a Jazz last week, It guzzled petrol on the Motorway.
Not impressed at all in it's high speed manners and consumption.
Having said that I'd rather have one than any Escort.

Wife gets 45 on the computer - she never checks it properly, so may not be too accurate. Mixture including fair amount on Mways at about 80 -85 and including this "high speed" the economy seems to be OK. What speed did Ashok do to get it to guzzle?

Keep the engine near whatever RPM peak torque is at. I'd imagine somewhere around 3500 for an 8v old engine.

LOL, I will have to judge that by ear. Our escort hasn't got a rev counter!
Most economical- Jazz or Escort - bell boy
you wont need a rev counter to know when one of those is doing 3500 revs :-)

The HCS OHV can do 45MPG with a carb like the AA guy said, but I wouldn't think you could get that with the fuel injection model at early nineties standards. Probably around 40+MPG still though.
