Failed mot today on "handbrake imbalance"....
Seems to be a common problem......I am hoping it is only a dry mechanism and a bit of grease will fix it.
Any pointers of what i should look out for/tips?
Cheers.

worn out brake shoes, leaking wheel cylinders, adguster worn out, pull the dodgy side off and take a look!

...worn out brake shoes, leaking wheel cylinders ...should both show up with reduced efficiency on the footbrake test. Did you get all the figures? This can always give you a good pointer. The best thing is to talk to the tester, he will have a pretty good opinion on what is the likely cause.

Rear calipers can be a bit sticky, grease the sliders, lube the handbrake actuation arm with WD40 (though be VERY careful not to let it get on the discs or pads), also the cables can bind. Not much help though a few things to check.

There was at least one handbrake recall/service action on the Mk3. One involved fitting a new lever with a manual adjuster to replace the auto adjuster and another involved fitting levers to the rear brake calipers. The spec of the handbrake cables was also changed.
If it has been maintained in the dealer network it should have been done, although my 02 car only had the work done in 2004. A Ford dealer should be able to check the reg number on OASIS and see if there are any outstanding service actions.

Most common problem with handbrake faults on these mk 3 Mondeos is seized cables.Best to change them as a pair.

I have had a couple of problems with binding rear brakes on my Mondeo, the dealer though it was binding cables though it was in fact sticking caliper sliders.
