How thorough is too thorough?
The though crossed my mind of turning up at the next car I look at with a set of ramps so I can get underneath properly (Toledos have a drip tray so I'll want to get that off for a proper look.)
Provided I give them my money first of all should the worst happen, can you see a problem?

look at car if happy ask vendor if you can have an inspection done,if answer is yes then turn up next day in disguise and get your ramps out,that way you dont lose your deposit and vendor is confident the car will pass your tests,im assuming you mean s/h?
if car a lot of money consider taking car for an independant mot with vendors permission to a garage you know and trust

Peugeot use 2 different bolt sizes and weird little plastic clip things on mine!

Vendor should not have a problem if asked to check and dismantle undercover,if they do then I would walk away.
but if no signs of engine oil leaks ie sweat is not a prob/gearbox leaks mechanical defects ie noise in wheel bearing`s diff whine,steering probs,also body checks,be carefull how you look at a car ie preferably at a distance not close up,this can define a good body from bad but hidden repairs

I wouldn't just let any old Tom Dick or Harry loose on my car with their tool kit. Look but don't touch (dismantle) is my motto. After they'd paid me the money they could do what they liked.

I'm with L'escargot here, not keen on someone who may or may not purchase my car starting to dismantle what is currently my car, I'd be happy to jack it up if they really wished to have a look underneath but i draw the line at starting to remove covers and that sort of thing.

What the they break the (usually) fragile undertray when they take it off, who pays?

There is no way I would let the purchaser have the wagon up on ramps and start taking bits off.

CRIKEY!! I thought it bad enough when the customer brings a mate 'that knows about vehicles' - then procedes to rev the engine to the red line, from cold!!
Even the vehicle inspection companies, won't go too far in taking bits off.
I wouldn't be too keen on letting this take place!!

In my minicabbing days my front brake pads wore down to the metal one evening. A colleague helped by withdrawing the brake pads and levering with a big screwdriver until he got a piston jammed crooked in its bore, then scarpering. Another helped by splitting the caliper and hitting the jammed piston with a big hammer until it freed itself.
The brakes still worked well for some time afterwards. Quite a good car the Hillman Hunter.

It most certainly did. I'm sure they weren't reserved for the upmarket variants like Singer Vogue, which mine actually was. Only difference was its aluminium cylinder head (the Hillman had an iron one). Being an estate mine had a low back axle ratio and could have done with an overdrive gearbox.

This was actually a comment made by a mate with me at time of posting,Didnt agree with him anyway,But would say he is a succesfull secondhand car dealer.
Just bought his own garage after running a s/h car garage for someone else,I did used to do odd jobs for him, but after a dissagreement this ended.
As a friend he is ok,but to work for a pain to be polite...
really dont understand how he got there.
so I think I owe an apollogy to everyone for saying this!.

I turned up with a lump hammer the last time - but it was a Series Land Rover and it's kind of de rigeur with those to lamp the chassis a few times.

Well my last two cars have gone from me to the great scrapheap in the sky so I haven't had to sell a car for 10 years but soon I will have to sell one car and one bike and I am dreading the idiots that will be coming round.
I remember in my younger days buying and selling a lot of cheap cars on a regular basis and having one idiot spending 30 minutes bouncing the suspension mounts on a Mk1 Escort I was selling for £50 and then declaring he wanted £10 off for a slight lack of bounce. I told him to proceed forth and procreate.
It comes downs to levels and behaving reasonably. If you are shelling out £5,000+ get it AA inspected.
If its a £500 job then a quick look see but don't be acting likely your buying a brand new Maybach and everything has to be perfect. If you want perfect buy new used cars have been used and have wear and tear thats why they are cheaper than new cars. Sorry but some buyers just don't seem to get that.
So if you turned up at my place with car ramps then you would be on your way quick smart.
