Have a claim against another insurance company that are intent on messing you and your insurance company about, or you need to sue someone then i wouldnt be without it.

If an accident is the fault of a third party, they'll extract your losses directly from their insurer, no need to claim on yours or pay an excess usually, but it varies from policy to policy.

Sue an uninsured driver, cyclist, pedestrian or property owner if needed, such as if scaffolding falls on your car.

ashok, so if a neibours roof tile hits my car..or the lout next door hoofs a ball at it, i can use the legal service to have my car fixed without touching my insurance??

i just didnt want to agree to spend £40 ( £20 x 2 cars) on something i have no understanding of

You're paying for a service, not an additional right.
If you'd rather save £15-20 and sort the issues out yourself and feel confident doing so then that's all well and good.

I take the cover, as I wouldn't want to pursue such things myself, and don't want to pay for hire car while mine is being repaired, whereas I get one free to me and they claim it directly off third party assuming they're to blame.

I had legal cover almost by accident (I never got round to cancelling it). When someone drove into the back of me, Albany Uninsured Loss Recovery Service, upon instruction from my insurers swung into action. Result: No excess to pay and claim back, brand new X5 courtesy 'car' for a week and no hassle...

IIRC if you are in the AA or RAC they have a legal dept. who will act on your behalf, or give advice, included in your annual fee.

Lets put it this way:
The first Monday after the clocks went back i was involved in a RTA with a 3rd party@ 0715 ( Not my fault).I reported this to my insurance company at 0900, by 1200 the nominated soliciters practice was aware. Car was drivabel ( 1 head light out) Courtesty car from Wednesday for over a week. i paid the excess on collecting it from the bodyshop. Within 3 weeks the 3rd party insurers had admitted liability and refunded my excess.
By the begining of Nov i was reimbursed for the cost of 2 child seat, and by the begining of April was reimbursed for personal injury ( whiplash).
I had copies of all the letters and correspondance written on mybelf, how much do Soliciters chage for these?
For the £10/15 extra it's money well spent.

I paid Legal Expenses for years (£7 the 1st time) & nver needed it - 5 years ago - car was 2 weeks old I was hit from behind @ red traffic lights - the person 2 x behind said she was to blame - retracted this when she spoke to the boyfriend - turns out no insurance as thye had not called their Ins Co re Courtesy car.

Refused to answer phone calls, sent letters back as Unknown at this address, did not acknowledge receipt of papers. Refused initially to speak tio the Police ( who I asked to help) - The police were reluctant as it was a mnor accident - a letter to the Chief Inspector re Uninsured driver & lack of interest by police was quickly resolved. Lawyer was great and chased them, eventually garae who provided loan car said they had 3rd party cover (initially they said not their problem as they had a signed waiver for insurance) and the Merc garage insurer paid up eventually

2 years later - on the eve of the trial (& £1200 legal bill + medical bills) we were due at court when she remembered that she caused the accident - the thought of a court appearance & the witness box was enough to get her to change her story to the original account.

Without legal expenses I would not have chased them as £1200 legal bill exceeded my out of pocket expenses but my NCB would have been affected. I got £4800 - £4K whiplash, £100 excess & my insurer got their £700 & I kept my NCB.

Best £17 I spent in a long time

Thing is, had you gone to a solicitor on a Conditional Fee Agreement (in England and Wales at least) the same thing would have happened and you still wouldn't have had to pay anything in those circumstances.

That said, if you are involved in a non-fault accident then it certianly makes things easier and although my current insurer includes it as standard, I've always gone for it when I've had the option.

If you are only going third party or TPF&T then it's definitely worth it because the loss in writing off anything worth less than ~£5k won't be sufficient to make you eligible for a CFA unless there's personal injury involved.

The Chap behind me who had damage Front & Rear employed a No Win No Fee agency/solicitor and I phoned them to tell them that I had had a settlement. The "No Win/No FeeLawyers" had made little progress but they had not institiuted court proceedings because of the up-front costs.

For my £17 I got a good solicitor from one of the best known legal practices in Scotland for £17.00. It was bargain.

There is comprehensive insurance and there is comprehensive insurance. The terms of the policy vary from one company to another. You get what you pay for.
