1996 Rover Mini stalling when cold - TomR
I'd appreciate some help with a problem I'm having with an automatic, 1.3 1996 Mini Mayfair.

The car starts first time and pulls away OK, however when slowing down when the car is cold it sometimes splutters and then stalls. The car can be restarted OK, however it sometimes stalls a couple of times when pulling away. One warm, everything is fine.

I've recently changed the plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. I've also checked for splits in the vacuum hoses, and didn't find any.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

i had a similar problem a few years ago with a sierra, it turned out to be a carb problem, i changed the diaphram and cleaned everything out, and fitted a inline fuel filter, it cured it. you have done eletrical items have you checked the fuel side?

It's fuel injection, so I'm not sure what I can check, however I'm planning to check the petrol filter this weekend.

Doubt petrol filter will cause it,could try the coil or even the crank position sensor, as it sounds electrical rather than fuel supply

for such a basic engine pre cat this car now has a plethora of sensers it may be cheaper to have it code read rather than working blind..............to be honest i didnt realise these old ecu minis were so comnplicated emmissions wise

I think it has a version of MEMS doesn't it?

I have a mate with one,at the moment its stood on drive as its failed emmissions three times.

He is looking at scrapping it due to not finding the problem, every diagnostics check has come up air temp sensor on manifold, but this has been replaced for a new one before last MOT but still failed.

These as far as I recall dont store a code,(I could be wrong on this car)only show a fault if its there at time of check,But dont appear to be very accurate ie give false info,so you are still working blind.

Much the same as R200/400 IMO bad idea as far as diagnostics is concerned

i can only suggest pull off all connectors and then reconnect and also make sure any earths are good and strong then as this was never a mini strong point, dont forget the earth in the boot as well,im guessing the battery is a good one as these can cause stall conditions.
Ive never had a mini with cat so trying to picture if it has a stepper motor on the su? maybe this has packed up? can you see it and hear adjusting itself it by turning the ignition lights on if it has one?

If its like a rover 200 on the ecu is this the type with the map inside the ecu steve.o?

Yes,as far as I am aware it is,though my mate replaced ecu for recon, tested and warranted, his only option after this was to replace injection unit/single point on his and costs more than car is worth.

I changed the coil at the weekend and every time I've used the car it's been fine - whenever SWMBO uses it, it stalls!

Oldman - the comment on the battery is interesting. I replaced the battery when we bought the car 2 years ago, however I've noticed that the last few times I've used it there is a slight hesitation before it starts.

I'll check the battery next.

If all else fails I've got it booked in on 1 June, but I'd love to fix it before then!

Thanks for all the advice.
