Anyone on here got (or know someone who has) an Aygo?

I'm thinking about getting a small car with excellent fuel economy and Aygo seems to fit the bill. I like the look of the car and also Toyota's reputation for reliability.

So please post any comments you have.

Thanks.

MY friend has a 107, which is the same car. It's very good, though when she was moving out of her uni room it took a few trips...it's a nice-driving car, and doesn't roll too much. I think it's excellent for the price.

A neighbour who works at a Toyota dealership has been driving around in one of these for a few weeks. It certainly appears to be well made with good shut-lines etc and is probably as reliable as other Toyotas. One observation; the 3-cylinder engine sounds a bit agricultural.

...but surely not as bad as a diesel!!!

I had read in other road tests that it revs well. Someone even wrote it sounds like a mini-911, whatever that means.

Oddly enough it does sound a bit like a Porsche. I expect a diesel to sound like a diesel and a petrol engine to sound like a petrol engine. These 3 cylinder cars tend to confound that expectation.

Autobytel have the base model for under £6000 - but as of last month that would also buy the (larger) base model Mitsubishi Colt 1.1....

Yes, much bigger cars and second hand ones can be had for similar or less money but I am after something with great fuel economy and greener.

Have a look at www.toyotaownersclub.co.uk and head for the owners forum. You will see a forum dedicated to the Aygo.Have a read.

I'll tell you what the Aygo did remind me of in it's engine noise - my Uncle's old Volvo 850T5...strange...
Toyota Aygo? - P3t3r
It strange some of the things you guys have been saying. I've driven the Aygo and didn't like it. It felt to me like it was going to fall over when it was cornering, the body roll seemed bad. On a slightly bumpy road surface it felt very bouncy too.

I wasn't keen on the engine either, it was completely flat. As you rev it the engine does nothing, no more torque no more noise! The one I drove had about 1000 miles on it, and the handbrake light flashed on occasionally.

On the ones you've driven have you found that you need to take 2nd gear to about 25-30mph? IIRC it was a struggle in 3rd at anything less than 25mph.
Toyota Aygo? - Manatee
Not up to date with prices but when I looked the Citroen version was £500 cheaper (list) than the Toyota. They all come from the same factory and have the same (Toyota I believe) engine.

FWIW we bought a new Panda Dynamic for £5500 - granted the fuel economy is not as good though acceptable at 50mpg.

Hi, My father has the Peugeot 107 version and is very pleased with it. Handles well and the 1.0 engine is excellent, feels well built. Good value for the price, Peugeot dealer had discounted price after Xmas to £6300 and has a three year warranty!
Just check boot space which is limited (2 to 3 shopping bags) but back seats easily fold down.
Hope this helps,

As much as I like the Lupo, I want something with adecent crash rating. I don't think the Lupo would do well given the age of the design.
Toyota Aygo? - Adam {P}
I would be very surprised if the Lupo was worse than an Aygo in a crash.

Mate at work has just swapped his 53 plate Lupo for a C1...likes the car but not impressed with the quality compared to his Lupo
Toyota Aygo? - Manatee
You wouldn't be surprised then - they both have **** and the same overall rating from NCAP.

Well done to the Lupo. 4* was a great result for a city car in 2000.

One advantage of an Aygo over the near-identical C1 and 107 is that there are more good Toyota dealers around. But if you have a Peugeot or Citroen dealer near you whom people recommend, then go for one of those.

Younger daughter's boyfriend has an Aygo - very happy so far and no problems.

Elder daughter thought about it to replace her 1.3 Yaris - but tried a new 1.3 Yaris first....Don't do that if you want to end up with an Aygo.
Toyota Aygo? - daveyjp
A friend has recently swapped her smart and visited Citroen, Pug and Toyota dealerships to look at the Aygo in it's various forms. She said the treatment she received at Toyota was far and away the best of the three - they lent her a car for a day and acknowledged that it was her buying and not her boyfriend! The Toyota is dearer, but the cost to change they discussed was less than the other two due to Toyota offering a decent figure for the smart. In the end she decided the Toyota offered little over and above her smart (the rear seats were almost unusable and she now needs four seats), so she bought a pre registered forfour instead!

Auto Express this week tests the Aygo against the upcoming VW Fox and the German car wins, despite being a bit bargain basement in kit and trim.

Fox and the German car wins, despite being a bit bargain

Now that is a surprise, I most look at the article.

I didn't expect the Fox to perform very well given that it is a cheapo car from South America. The early reviews I saw of it looked very poor.

Toyota Aygo? - kenl
Just had a look at the Fox on line.

It's fuel consumption is poor compared with Aygo. Given that this is one of my main drivers I wouldn't consider it.

Fox 1.2 46mpg combined
Aygo 61mpg combined

Aygo is also quicker with it's 1L 67bhp engine compared to a poor 55 for the Fox's 1.2
Toyota Aygo? - AlanGowdy
The Toyota does appear the more modern and attractive car - worth reading the article perhaps.
Toyota Aygo? - daveyK_UK
the c1 can be picked up in 3 door vibe form for £5750

expect that to be nearer £5500 towards christmas.

why pay an extra grand for a toyota badge - its the same car.

I will probably take a look at it and the Peugeot version. I do though much prefer the look of the Toyota. What is the interior like in the French versions? I like the funky, minimalist look of the Aygo - quality seemed quite good too.
Toyota Aygo? - Big Bad Dave
Our magazine tested all three last year, I did the photo shoot. The interiors were absolutely identical in all three, same dash, fabric and everything. The only differences were in the body shell, lamp clusters etc. As far as I remember...
Toyota Aygo? - Big Bad Dave
Further to my above post I?ve just been re-reading the comparison test we did on the three cars. They?re so similar, the Aygo was the winner by a small margin but only because Toyota offered a better warranty.

To help make a decision, it?s worth checking what the service and parts costs will be for all three. Here in Poland for example, shocks for the Aygo are 471 zloty and for the Citroen 256. Brake pads - Citroen 228, Peugeot 349. A wing was 634 for the Peugeot and 426 for the Citroen. Air filter 52 for Toyota, 110 for Peugeot. Oil filter, 33 toyota and 88 for Peugeot. They also did a depreciation forecast where the Toyota lost 38% of its value in 4 years and the Citroen loses 44%.

These will be different obviously in the Uk but still could be deciding factors.

The Peugeot and Citroen body shells are identical, the Toyota is a bit prettier, not having that huge grill.

BTW: I've got a question - who are those girls on the photos in your magazine ? For example in the current issue on page 18, testing 307 CC & Megane Cabrio. Over few past months I've seen plenty of them on the pages... I presume they're from your office ?

Toyota Aygo? - Big Bad Dave
Those girls are professional models V de M, you?ll see them in next week?s mag too for the Micra and Citroen C3 porownanie. We only pay for models for main features, everyone else that appears in the magazine works in the office. I occasionally appear if the script calls for someone very, very handsome.

Are you in love? Maybe I could get you a number...

Nah, I?m not in love... Just curious, though. To be honest they don?t look like professional models to me, but I guess it could be just like with cars ? gotta see ?em in the flesh hehe.

I design and illustrate for a weekly Polish car mag - actually in direct competition with the Auto Express franchise

"Auto Express this week tests the Aygo against the upcoming VW Fox and the German car wins, despite being a bit bargain basement in kit and trim."

They cite more cabin space and better refinement and performance (the Fox is a 1.4, the Aygo a 1.0 but there i only 7 bhp between them).

I should think this choice is one of horses for courses: the Aygo would suit a single person living in a city, whereas the Fox would be the better second car ferrying kids and shopping.

The Aygo/C1/107 might be only the same shoppoing list as a Ka or Smart, the Fox might be alongside the Punto or Kia Picanto.
Toyota Aygo? - frazerjp
If i hadn't brought my Ford Ka a couple of years back, i think i'd consider an Aygo myself.

I asked a friend in the trade about the Aygo vs. Suzuki Swift. He had a customer trading in a very, very new Aygo as he hated it; the Toyota dealership (part of his group) didn't want it back and went 'behind book', which apparently isn't a good sign...

He recommended the Swift.
Toyota Aygo? - Aprilia
I think the Swift is a fair bit bigger than the Aygo. The Swift is more the size of the Yaris.
Toyota Aygo? - kenl
Yes, Swift looks very nice but my driver is fuel economy and low emissions. To get near the fuel economy of an Aygo you need to spend close to 10k for the diesel.

They are selling really well so I doubt there is much of a discount to be had on them.
Toyota Aygo? - wotspur
I've had to hire a car for a week whilst my Espace is being sorted out, and I have a AYGO, considerably smaller but I find it a pleasure to drive. Hiring a car for a week at £115 is a small price to pay rather than spending whatever on a new car and not being sure.

Nah, those chicks are different & don't really look like professional models to me. Money thrown out of the window I'm afraid, BBD.

I'm curious whether you've REALLY conducted that sex-in-the-car survey by yourself (where, why, how ?) or is it based on some other well known research ?

Toyota Aygo? - Big Bad Dave
Ha ha. I don?t know where they got that data from, the "raport" section is usually pretty well researched because it?s normally of serious content. I?ll ask tomorrow and mail you. It?s our attempt at something light-hearted to try and steal readers from Auto Swiat. They?re only 2000 or so ahead of us but in Polish advertising - winner takes all - we?re having problems filling our pages. Next week we?re down to 48 but on the plus side, I?ve got the afternoon off cos there?s nothing to do.

The Citoen, Peugeot and Toyota are made in the PAS factory in East of europe the cars are identical .It will be interesting to see if one depreciates faster than the other beacause of the badge.
Toyota Aygo? - alex

Yes, they're all made in the Czech Republic. All three are identical when they leave the factory but I wonder if the quality of the individual manufacturer dealerships will influence future resale values ?

I went shopping for one of these last year. And ended up with a C3. Never mind.

My take on it was that the Citroen was cheapest and the Toyota prettiest and best badge. The Peugeot was ugly, the same price as the Toyota and (in my case) sold at the same garage as the Citroen.

But i seem to remember that the trim / engine / number of doors are different between the badges. i can't remember the detail, but if you wanted a 5dr diesel with Aircon, the optimum badge would be different to a 3dr petrol base.

Toyota dealers are worth the extra money.
Citroen dealers well forget it you really dont want to go there.
Ive had a Yaris for years and the dealers are the best.
Toyota Aygo? - AlastairW
Would you be able to get the Citroen serviced at a Toyota garage (or vice versa)?
You would then have the benefit of the cheaper car and the best service.
Toyota Aygo? - Dodge
That would be a neat way around the problem.
I would say however that although the list prices of the two cars are different when you shop around it should be possible to pay a lot less for the Toyota. I have bought two Toyotas in the last 2 years and both came via a car broker at a large discount to list price. I do think the C1 looks prettier from the back!!!
