There was an interesting article in the Saturday Telegraph about someone who had their Porsche stolen by a thief posing as a buyer. The cheque was dud although the bank said on the phone that it was okay. Anyway, the victim realised that a gang was operating, and rang round all sellers of Porsches to warn them. It turned out that other Porsches had indeed been stolen in the same manner. The police set up a sting, but before it took place, the police found the original Porsche. Unfortunately when the sting was due to take place, the police could not make the appointment due to having no-one available. Apparently the copper was attending a murder inquiry.

There's a few things I find interesting about the story. Clearly the victim had disrupted the gang's operations by warning potential victims. That is presumably why his car was returned. Also it appears that police only set up the sting as a result of legwork by the victim, and yet it had to be called off due to lack of staff. Are the police really that understaffed? Surely if a resourceful victim can work out that a gang is targeting cars of a specific type, the police could do the same, and nab the culprits.

Yes, the average Police officer detects just 10 crimes per year (ESRCS), well I could do that in a day. this is because the police are too busy due to political correctness, mountains of red tape and own back covering. 3,000 man hours a year are wasted every time a new 7 minute for or PC 'stop certificate' is introduced.

The Police have plenty of staff, they're just not deployed in front line policing! Response officers are so understaffed, they have to operate a 'fire brigade' style of operating. Going from one job to another, with no time to investigate it properly.

However, those officers detect significantly more than 10 crimes a year.

And if you feel you can detect 10 crimes a day, you can come on my shift anytime!

Detecting crime isn't what is needed IMHO! What we need is crime solving and convictions!

The police are no longer all that keen on taking aprt in stings, as I discovered when I strung along a "Nigerian" team who sent me a dodgy draft for £4,500 for a £300 Uno. I even had them believing that I was working as a contractor on a London plice station, and that I would give them the cash if they came to the building, which they did. OK, it was only a mule, but they had the chance and turned it down. Local officers in the Met are no longer allowed to run stings - all has to be done from SY - and worth a lot more than yr. avg. motor.

So where are most officers deployed? I might guess that we have politically motivated targets and paperwork, but that's based on no knowledge.

This isn't just the Daily Mail's opinion. An excellent blog from the front lines is here:

What shocked me about this story was how the couple basically had to come up with a way to solve the crime themselves (contacting other advertisers) and hand it to the police on a plate - and still the crooks got away.

Local dealer to us, on the A1, had 3 Mondeos, a Focus & an Omega stolen, during the night, from their, well locked (so they thought)& fenced site, last week.

All for breaking, I guess - or cloning Fords - but the Omega must have been a DEFINITE order, 'cos there's plenty around, if you did want parts.

& just to make it more worthwhile, the lowlifes, decided to turn on the taps & flood out the offices too - such fun!!!
