Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI on flexible servicing.
One year old 8000 miles No service warning but did not like going over 1 year so had a service. VW 506.01 oil.
After 12 miles checked dip stick. Oil is black. Not tinged black but black. Got the oil can in the boot -they had used 4.5 litres approx.out of it but maybe not in my car.
Have a horrible feeling someone thought --this car has miles to go before the oil is done for so how about not changing it.
Question --should the oil on the dipstick still look like cloudy corn oil after only 12 miles or is it so thin and penetrating that it will have stirred up muck and gone black in such a short time? How much black muck would there be to disperse into 4.5 litres of oil ? Enough for this effect?

no expert Tony, but when I 1st had a diesel, which was pre common rail stuff, I thought exactly the same thing after it's 1st service. Turns out diesel oil does this virtually immediately. Don't quite know why-would be quite interested to know actually! Can't see there being muck to stir up. One of the functions of the oil & its extras is to hold anything like that in a protective suspension.

Oil on my HDi stays clean for...well...a lot more than 12 miles! Black, but you can still see the oil through the particles of soot.

Yes, dont forget not all the old will be drained out so whats left (small amount)will get washed into the new oil and wont take long to mix,nothing to worry about as its normal on diesels

Try looking at the sump plug and oil filter. If the oil (and presumably filter) have been changed recently there should still be some evidence of leaking oil around them.

All diesel engines do this due to soot being pumped into the oil.
When they drain (or they might suck - jury's out on this, but some people think it's better) the oil out, they don't get every last drop out, so the new stuff discolours as soon as the engine is started.

Its disappointing isn't it? My 107,000 mile T4 has an oil change every 3000 miles with a flush and filter every 6000, yet almost immediately the oil goes a familiar black colour. Whenever I change the oil on a diesel I make sure the customer sees the fresh oil going in to avoid the circs you find yourself in. As advised check around the drain plug and filter for evidence.

Just be aware that if they did suck the oil out (quite a lot of main dealers do now) they won't have touched the drain plug.
