Looking for a fun weekend car to buy and fancy one of these retro beasts!

Anyone owned one and can give me an opinion on them? Is it a high insurance group? Anything I shoyuld look out for? What is the best model to have?

Know I will probably get shot down for wanting one...;-)

My first job, 1979, aged 17, my boss had a MkIII 2.0S, he would hand me the keys so I could run errands, I was in my element and dreamt about owning a 3.0S. Would feel so old and stodgy to drive now though I bet.
Ford Capri-Good buy? - scc
I had a 2 litre V4 Capri back in the 70's -very light at the back, especially in the wet - spectacular skids were easy to achieve!
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Happy Blue!
Cortina in drag, but the 3.0 or 2.8 were torquey beasts that sound great. Easy to work on and cheap to run if you can find one without rust. Best are the run out 2.8s.

'Cortina in drag, '

Cortina rear suspension was completely different.
I had a Mk.2 1600GT,quite fast and fun to drive.

When a current model I drove one & at the time had an Opel Manta GTE Hatch, The Opel could & did run rings around the Capri. Something to do with having proper suspension instead of cart springs!
The GTE was a Company car & did 42K miles in its first year & had people fighting to buy it afterwards.

Get a Capri 2.8, for performance to keep up with today's cars. I love the twin exhaust pipes on that model. There is a special edition called the Capri 280 that was made right at the end. Someone's got one of them on ebay, and it's been totally restored. Have a look..
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Pugugly {P}
Remember that the bigger engined cars don't enjoy a happy relationship with the rear wheel drive set up. It is a pretty primative set up (if not fun !). The 3,0 litre V6 is a monster in the wet and will happily spin its wheels in the lower gears ! Fun car superb sound.
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Adam {P}
Dad went through a Capri phase when I was younger.

I remember when he got shut of the 2.8 and got a 3.0. I was three, and had a booster seat in it.

And I still remember it to this day.

Awesome cars. Get one.

Adam,

Was it as tail happy as I remmeber ? (Had a T Plate 2.8i in the family when we were in between life crises and cars back in the seventies)
Ford Capri-Good buy? - nutty_nissan
Yes, the 2.8i was pretty tail happy! Great fun if you know what you are doing!
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Adam {P}
I've just asked Dad PU and he smirked. Began to mention something about fishtailing and Mum glared at him.

Then he said it was a perfectly well behaved car. Dunno what he means.

It makes a modern big engined BMW a pussy cat in comparison I can tell you !
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Altea Ego
PU

there were every bit as tail happy as you thought. Those cars taught me how to powerslide and handle massive lift off foot down oversteer. They used to understeer as well if you didnt over steer them correctly! Widowmakers in the wet

The best fun of my life was a unmodified 3 litre Mk1 round castle comb circuit. (till the front brake pads cooked, broke up and dropped out)

The 2.8 was SWMBO's car when I met her, she drove it like a demon but never lost it. I think the 2.8s were better than the 3.0 litre ptobably a combination of better power delivery, tyres and suspension set up.
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Roger Jones
The limited-slip differential probably helped too. If only they hadn't put the wrong lubricant in on assembly. I repeat: I have never had a problem with my car's handling and I suspect that the reports of those who did come a cropper probably ought to include the reckless youth factor as much as the car's intrinsic qualities. I can well imagine word gaining currency that "they break away if you push them", so they got pushed even more. You can put anything in a ditch if you try hard enough.
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Altea Ego
There was a huge difference in handling as the marque went on, and dependent on the power plant used. I think I drove every marque and every variant over the last 30 years. They draw me like magnets. You cant take the essex out of the boy.

The early Mk1's were very crude suspension wise. The long bonnet meant that the lesser power plants (1.3, 1.6 and 2.0 litre)were against the bulk head with a big empty gap to the front so had a fair weight distribution. The animal three litre filled the engine bay, and pushed a lot of weight in front of the front wheels. Given the poor suspension, huge torque and RWD this became the real animal.

The later marques had much better suspension, better weight distribution, fatter and better tyres, and when it got to the last of the 2.8is and 280s was actually a much tamer beast. Anything with a hatch was a comparitive doddle.

The 3 litre Mk1s were the ditch seekers and in my mind the prettiest and sexiest of cars ever made.

RS2600 and RS3100! IIRC the former was Cologne developed (as were the 2.8i's by the way) and the latter Essex, Dunton I guess.
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Pugugly {P}
Wasn't that the V6 Essex engine ? A fine British made lump that powered Ambulances of that era. I'm trying to remember the name of 2.8 engine,,,,was it the Cologne (?), anyway it was a far smoother motor than the Essex. Professionals on Men and Motors, watch it and weep !

I owned a 1978 2.0S (the one with twin headlights) from new ? it was silver with Recaro seats, alloy wheels etc. I?ve never owned any other car that drew such a lot of admiring glances ? my then girlfriend hated it!
I never had a problem with oversteer ? I guess it didn?t really have the power. However understeer in the wet was ridiculous ? it just wouldn?t go around corners, roundabouts etc, at *any* sort of speed. I had quite a big crash in it after a few months when a country lane turned right and the car didn?t.

The facelift was approx late '74 (N) to late '76 (R) when the MkIV was launched. It was also distinguished by the re emergence of the 'E' badge due to the 2000E replacing the GXL, also 'GL' replaced 'XL', 'GT' was dropped IIRC and was only replaced by the 'S' on the MkIV.

One of my best cars I ever had. First was 1973 MK1 3ltr V6 manual, then a 1976 MKII 3ltr V6 auto. Of the two, the manual was best for performance, but the second for comfort and road holding. The 3ltr is a far better engine than the 2.8, the tappets never need adjusting where the 2.8 need regular checking. Also the 2.8 suffers from crankshaft rumble and in general a noiser engine although the later models had a 5 speed box, LSD and better suspension.

I had a Sierra 4x4 with a 2.8 and this was far my best car, but wished it had the 3ltr unit not the 2.8 for the reasons given and it was'nt as torqueky as the 3ltr.

The 3ltr's where good for a 120k plus with the honing marks still the bores, but the 2.8 crank started rumbling at about 50k. The 3ltrs were fitted to Reliant Simitar's, TVR's and Gilbern's

So I would have a Mk1 or II any day with a 3ltr and manual transmission as a fun car, but my desire would be another 4x4 again.

Ford Capri-Good buy? - autumnboy
Also I forgot to add these MK1 and II were made in Germany and of better quality.
Ford Capri-Good buy? - Marc
Very true. My dad had a brand new 1975 MkII 1.6XL and it was rusty before three years old - especially around the headlamps. He replaced it with an ex demo 1978 2.0 Ghia (Mk II) built in Germany and that was still very tidy when it was nicked in 1985. Much better steel apparently. I still think the nicest one he had was the 1969 1.6 (OHV) GTXLR however.

My first car was a 1982 1.6 Calypso and I ran it into the ground by 110k and ten years old. The drivers seat collapsed, heating fan failed, rusted badly on front valance, headlamp surrounds, door bottoms and boot lid, rear parcel shelf collapsed, both doors drop on their hinges, water got in through front bulkhead and the spare wheel well was a fishtank. Engine was OK though.

Haynes do a DIY restoration book for the Capri, it's very useful. If I were to buy another as a weekend/hobby car I would have a MkII 2.0 or 3.0 S - like Minder

It MUST have FSH if not it WILL be a money pit. My friends brother had a 944 & he loved it. If you buy one check the engine for oil leaks, knocks & wheezes & also that it drives & stops in a straight line, make sure the panel lines are all straight n true & that it has power steering, also check all the electrical switches. Your best bet if you decide on a 944 is to buy from a member of the owners club, that way you can be sure it has been looked after. Hope this helps a little.

Car Mechanics did an article on rebuilding a 944 engine. DIY costs around £15000 in parts alone.

I did a LOT of research on buying a 944 turbo.. Decided a fool and his money are best kept together and did not. Electrical problems (also another Car Mechnics article on ECUs ) can be eye wateringly expensive.

Routine maintenance is £££££S.

Petrol pipes rust, - not cheap.. suspension age and wear, clutches diffs etc.. All £££££S...

I guess they had to do it five times before they got it right then?

The cost for a full bottom end rebuild was about £1200 on mine incl. labour (about 10yrs ago).

>Routine maintenance is £££££S.

Don't know what the price is now but I think the routine service was just over £200 then. Check Porsche World magazine for todays prices but I doubt they'll be much over £300 now.

944s (especially the 250bhp Turbo-S model) are excellent everyday fun cars and very reliable.

Where does the ££££££s rubbish come from, not from anyone who knows obviously!
Yup quite agree do a lot of work myself just upgraded to S2 4 pot Brembos all round on mine & done discs & a front wheel bearing, discs £43 front, £40 Backs, wheel bearing £ 20.
Service is £ 240 from a specialist. Expensive bits are belts around £220 if just the belts, mine was £ 470 as idlers & seals needed doing. Clutch is expensve circa £ 600 but needs it around every 80K or so.
Someone on Porsche net has just had an engine rebuilt to an effectively unlimited budget by a specialist for £ 4,400.
But sensible way is grab another egine for circa £ 1,500 cos they don't generally wear out.
