Hi

I would have thought it would affect his policy just as it would as if he were driving unless the policy wording says different.

Its your brothers policy, you have had an accident on his policy, so if he does not have a protected NCB, then yes he will loose it.

If the claim is on his policy then that is where the NCD gets affected.
In addition, it may affect your insurance as well.

I had an accident recently and wrote off a £14k secondhand car (and nearly me, dear Lord) we'd bought two weeks earlier. It wasn't on my policy, I was just named driver. There was NCD on the policy, but not protected.

They paid out the full purchase price with no argument, which was refreshingly lovely. We then bought an identical replacement car.

They said it was "the same policy" so no charge.

I told my own insurers anyway to be sure and they put the price up £30.

I then swapped insurers as it was the end of the policy year anyway and they cut the premium nearly £300.

It may very well be at renewal time next year the original policy will be hiked enormously. But it's possible the car will be sold by then anyway, as it's just a fun thing.

So it might just work out for you!

That's interesting - I noticed on computer insurance I took out for my daughter's laptop it says if they pay out then that's the end of the insurance. This makes sense - you insure something, it gets destroyed, they pay out, you go on your merry way. Actually they don't pay out - they replace the laptop, but the insurance stops.
Does car insurance always carry on after a write-off? Is it held in suspense until you get a replacement vehicle?

Depends on whose policy you claim on! If you have your own insurance you could claim on that but you are likely only to have 3rd party insurance, so if you were at fault you may be left with a big repair bill.

On his insurance, your fault, the NCB will be affected.

If the OP was named on the other drivers policy then that probably counts as being specifically insured. If he mentions his own insurance then they might try to share the cost across both companies (assuming they are different). When making a motor claim do they ask during the claims process if you have any other insurance which might cover you?
