Punto rear wiper inoperative - Halmer
Had a look at my sister in laws Punto today. Rear wiper not working and no water squirting either. Latter was a disconected pipe in the hatch but couldn't see anything obvious for the wiper not working.

When I turn the rear wiper switch I can hear a click from the motor but nothing happens. Anyone suggest what is might be please before I shell out on a new wiper motor for her. The fuse seems to be a common one for front and rear and the front ones are working OK so I've rules this out.

Thanks

have changed one in the past, usually suffer with rust between the wiper shaft and housing. sometimes it's possible to remove the rear plate and ease it up with ample wd40.

Also check you have full 12 v on the power supply to the motor. Check wiring between hatch and rear of roof.
You could also try connecting it straight to a 12 v supply, check the earth to the motor too, as this could lead to problems.

Thanks for responding.

If you lift the wiper blade off the glass and then turn the wiper on, does it work?

If it moves, then the spindle is corroded. (If not, then its a new wiper motor.)

Remove the wiper arm and let some 3 in 1 oil seep down the spindle. Then have your sister in law drive around without the wiper blade fitted, but the wiper motor switched on, for several weeks. Then refit the wiper arm and it should work like new.

To prevent this happening in the future do make sure she uses the rear wiper and ocassionally uses some oil.

Hi AD.

I haven't got access to the car at the moment but I'm fairly sure that I lifted the blade off the glass and it still dodn't work.

Hi Halmer

It sounds like the corrosion has gone too far. It would still be worth a try to turn the spindle with the wiper motor on, possibly with pliers, as a final check. Also a quick check of the electrical contacts might be worthwhile. If still no go then I am afraid it is a new motor.

You will probably be able to pick one up on ebay, for a fraction of a new part. Search for parts for a Fiat Punto to see if anyone is breaking one or is a regular breaker. Sending a few email questions to sellers should turn one up fairly quickly. Recently my wife's Clio suffered a vandalised drivers door mirror, located one on ebay and it was delivered and fitted within 3 days!
