Just had my Xsara MOT'd and an advisory was that the front brake pads were wearing thin. I trust the garage and it makes sense, as they haven't been changed for at least two years.
The garage recommended I have them done within the next 2000 miles - I suggested waiting until they start screeching but mechanic said that means they're knackering the disc.
1) Is this true?
2) How easy are the pads on the Xsara to change? I have a Haynes manual, jack, axle stands, and am quite handy with a set of tools.

What, by waiting for your brakes to start screeching, indicating that the brake linings are no longer existant and still expecting to stop on a sixpence?
FYI, metal to metal is never very good at stopping - however brake lining to metal is, and always will be.

Nope, I forgot to mention that a full service is due in just over 2000 miles, so what I really wanted to know was whether I should get them changed pronto or whether it could safely be left until then.
What I wasn't expecting was for some rightious do-gooder (no doubt someone who also complains when they see something mildly offensive on television) to launch in with a full bore criticism.

You asked for an opinion on whether you should wait until they started screeching.
By the time they've started screeching it'll be too late - hence risking your own life and others around you because your brakes won't be able to stop you.
That aside, changing the pads now will mean that you won't have the added expense of also having to change scored brake discs as well.

Yes its absolutely true. The pads for this car are cheap (as long as you dont go to the Citroen dealer !) and are easy to fit.
Try Euro Car Parts - thats where I got mine from when we had a Xsara.

Two good places in Leeds,I get just about all my supplies from
B&C carparts on Kirkstall Rd.,usually supply Mintex,next to Cardigan Arms.Abit further up the road,towards Leeds,
Swedish & German etc.off Canal Rd.between Machine Mart and Eddy's motorcycles,'round the back'.

I think Dave and myself could not be classed as righteous do gooders ,If a mechanic I trusted (your own words) said the pads need changing that is what I would do not go and ask if I could leave them till they screeched.
