Best Diesel car for £1,000? - DaveKent
(Header edited to make clearer what DaveKent wants. HJ)

Hi everyone.

I'm looking for a medium/larger size diesel car for about a grand.

What would be the best one to go for, Mondeo, 406, RENAULT LAGUNA, ford escort turbo diesel, CITROEN Xantia etc?

Whats best and whats the worse diesel.

Remember I only have £1,000.

Cheers for any help.

solely in terms of engine for a grand? I'd guess Xantia/405/406 TD...not necessarily best car though...

Normally if someone wants a cheap runner I say Ford, simply because the service and repairs are reasonable. But at this price you will be getting an old generation 1.8TD Mondeo - not an engine I would like to have. I've experienced this engine in an Escort and wasn't impressed. In fact it put me off diesels for years.

So of the rest, well anything can go wrong on an old car. You aren't going to get much Laguna or 406 for 1K.

I think I would try and find a nicely kept, privately owned 405.

My father in law had a '96 Mondeo TD that was fine. A Vectra is worth looking at the, early ones had the 1.7 Izuzu engine that is more refined than the 2.0 DTi that replaced it. I did 60k in a Cavalier with this engine and found it a great motorway cruiser, 45mpg at an all day 90mph across europe or crawling through London traffic.

I've just bought a 2000 Peugeot 406 TD,and have my 97 R plate Vectra 2.0DL to sell if your interested?

If you want a decent diesel engine in that size car, for that kind of money, it has to a Peugeot/Citroen. The XUD engine was the finest of its type to be found in a family car, 10 years or so ago. I think our 94 Xantia TD is worth peanuts now and if you can find one that has been maintained properly, they are a good buy. They are lovely cars to drive. My biggest gripe with the Xantia is a lack of legroom in the front.

I forgot to add, if you can find a decent independent garage that knows what they are doing with Citroens, they are not the black hole for maintenance and repairs that they are made out to be. The biggest single item that I have paid out for was for a replacement hydraulic pump - cost £300. It is the only major item to have been replaced on the car. Basic servicing has been cheap.

As a thoroughly biased but satisfied 406 owner, I wouldn't have anything else at this size/price. My only reservation is that, whilst 150k+ mile 406s are common, £1k is a pretty tight budget to get a nice diesel one.

I may be wrong but I think the 1.7 Isuzu had a combined alternator/brake servo pump which costs a bomb to replace. I think this engine was also used in some Vauxhalls. Not good news in a £1000 car

You're right, £150 for a recon unit, but its not often they go wrong. If any of the dashboard lights are doing things they shouldn't then be very wary, or at least factor in a £150 discount.

If you can find a cheap cavalier td in reasonable nic for a few £00 rhen go for it.

Had my mk2 Mondeo 1.8 TD for a year now and I've not had to spend anything on it other than servicing.
Okay, it's a bit of a rough engine, but not everyone can afford the newer HDI or Pumpe diese stuff can they?
Just done a weekend in the Lake District up and down the M6 and it returned 46 mpg with the aircon on.
I used to have a mk3 Fiesta 1.8D and that was 100% reliable.

What kind of 406 would you get for a grand? What kind of Mondeo/Vectra would you get for a grand.

I'd be looking at the most car you could get for 1000 quid if I were you.

But you don't have to get a newer HDI diesel. The PSA XUD unit is much more refined than anything you will find in a Ford or Vauxhall for the kind of price mentioned.

Actually, a grand gets you more of a 406 than I bargained for. Around here, anything from 70k upwards on a 1996 - 1997. That's from 700 quid too.
