Assuming a bonnet costs £100 to respray, does anyone have any ideas/guesses as to how much it would cost to respray the whole car...Magnum grey perhaps?

Rough ideas welcome.

Hypothetically, let's say the car is the size of a Focus saloon.

Proper job can easily be £2000. By proper, I mean dismantling of all non-painted internal and external components, so that all the original colour is resprayed. On a normal production car, it is rarely economical to do it.

Surely the gold Focus is not going???
Full Car Respray - Adam {P}
It possibly was becoming a Magnum grey one but now it certainly isn't. At less than a grand, I could have possibly talked myself into it - with a leather retrim. Not worth it on a *guess* 3 grand car though.

Cheers guys - the quickest open and shut thread ever!

I'd be suprised if you got a quote for less than a G.

I here ford do a very nice gold colour.
Full Car Respray - Adam {P}
I was hoping around the 700 quid mark. I mean...er....my mate was.

That gold colour? Eugh- I've seen it before. It looks a lot like vomit. I pity the poor fools who buy a Ford Focus saloon 1.8 in that colour.

Adam
Full Car Respray - Xileno {P}
You probably can get it done for £700, it all depends on what quality you want.
Full Car Respray - Adam {P}
Well - a while back, someone my Dad knows did the bonnet for a ton and it has a better finish on than the rest of the car. It really is flawless under any kind of lighting. That's why I used the 100 quid as a marker.

You're right though - it would be a silly waste of money which I wouldn't even see a penny of come sale time. I was just throwing some ideas around.

Paint is cheap, it's the labour that's expensive. A bonnet is relatively cheap to respray since there's little masking off to do. Compared that to a door, where you've got to mask (preferably remove) the door handle, mask the window rubbers etc...

Forget it, you'll never see your money back.
Full Car Respray - Adam {P}
Consider it forgotten.

Now then - what about buying a Cosworth engine and dropping it in.....Joking joking!! ;-)

What about one of those "fast and furious" style rear spoilers???

Please don't. I feel like I should tuck my pants into my socks every time I walk into Halfords now - even if I'm buying car wax!

I can tell you exactly how much it costs to respray a 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider...

I had mine done over christmas, I took off all the bits and pieces myself so all the bodyshop had to do was mask/prep/paint.

£2350, 2pack mettalic was used.

Would it not be more economical to sand paper all the gold off. The primer underneath is magnum grey.
Full Car Respray - Vansboy
Just done a google for Earl Shine - remember them?They were going to take the UK by storm in early 70's, £199 or something similar repaints!!

Worked on a production line basis, doing the stripping, sanding, masking, spraying, re-fitting, all in one go!!

This is what I got...

Still exist, it seems!!

Anyone know how much it might be to have a small crease taken out of a rear wing? I clipped the pavement today while making a sharp left turn to avoid an obstruction, and for some idiotic reason the council put a 3 foot bollard there.

It hasn't broken the paint, just pushed a crease roughly four inches long into the body. You can't really see it unless you look carefully.

Shame really, I always thought it would be someone else who damaged my car. The embarrassment of hitting it will be with me for some time to come, I think... guess it could have been a lot worse though!
Full Car Respray - Adam {P}
Why watch TV when you get all the comedy here.

How many more times Dave - I can't sand down any more cars! I got told off enough when I did it to my Dad's Peugeot.

£2300? That is a lot of dosh. A lotof dosh.

Vansboy, I'm a little unnerved about such a cheap respray - although shipping costs to America would probably make up for it ;-)

And Lee. I've seen pictures of your Fabia and it's definitely a more Autumnal shade of vomit. Definitely.

You can't beat this for vomit coloured. Not my car per se, but the same paint job and model.

Except mine has a big diesel engine in it. I think Citroen had so many of the coupe shell left over, and decided to stick diesel engines in them and sell them to cheapskates like me!

Why did Citroen do that with the colour of the Coupe. They had a great car, excellent value and then... they painted near enough all of them in vomit yellow! Arrghghghgh!

I gave up trying to find a 1.8 VTR in non sick-yellow and bought a Mondeo.

I guess it seems that way BUT you can see every penny of it on the car and believe me it was worth it :)

Assuming the Focus 1.8 Saloon is worth £3k as you say, why not put the £1k to it and buy another newer or lower mileage or bigger engined (or hatch!) Focus in a colour you prefer.

" *******MAN FOUND DEAD AT WHEEL**********

It's thought ridicule and persecution at the colour of his car pushed him over the edge. The cavernous boot of his Ford Focus saloon allowed him to crawl inside and feed a hose pipe from the exhaust into it effectively driving himself to death. "

That's what you'll be reading in the papers L'escargot if you're not careful ;-)

I'm guessing it's worth 3 grand - I've just hit 70k and that seems to be the norm. Actually though, I was having a conversation with Dad the other day and I said I'd have no qualms whatsoever about buying the exact same car again only newer. They seem to do a darker grey and I'm quite a fan of that lighter blue but I've not seen any 2.0 Ghias in it. Black, whilst suiting the hatch wouldn't suit the saloon as I think the orange lenses on the rear are too prominent.

Anyway - I'll be keeping old Bess for a while yet. If nothing else but to annoy all of you!

Is the new shape focus saloon out yet? I think that should look pretty good. The estate especially in ghia trim looks good, the saloon, if the concept was anything to go by, looked classy. The hatch - the dullest of the range, although the ST or RS should look better.

Yeah it's out. Bit of a letdown in the looks department though.

You just know the best course of action is immediate sale of your sick-coloured Focus saloon and the subsequent purchase of a newer, higher specified Mk2 Mondeo for less than you sell the Focus for. Then add the Ford styling pack, and you'll be pulling hot girls in no time*

*Actually I've not managed that yet.
Full Car Respray - Andy P
According to the latest, the new Focus RS has been delayed - the bean counters don't think it's going to be profitable enough.

Andy

Blue - you're biased ;-)

I would rather have a mark 2 Mondeo saloon (preferably an ST200 or ST24) than the new Focus saloon.

Bland bland bland.

Absolutely. Once you get a Mondeo TDCi, you won't even be interested in pulling girls. Other cars may simply be a means to an end, but a Mondeo TDCi is the answer to absolutely everything.
Full Car Respray - Adam {P}

On the subject of resprays, has anyone any idea how much it might cost to respray, say, . . . er, . . . a couple of letters on the badge on the back of a car?

A friend of my sister's once bought an old Mini which was actually pretty good mechanically - but paintwork was a real mess - panels of different colours, surface rust etc (but no actual dents or scrapes oddly enough.) She wanted it tidied up for very little money.

I bought 2.5 litres of blue Hammerite and a got myself a nice 3" brush. Job done in a couple of hours! No rubbing down, no undercoats, rust sorted.

The car went on for a few years and looked quite distinctive in its own way........Touching up was a doddle......

Owzat!
