Run-flat tyres and puncture repairs - rory
The new generation of these tyres - as fitted to BMW 1 & 3 series - are good for up to about 150 miles when punctured. As I understand it, you should then get a new tyre ( ££ - yelp ! ) because of the strain that has been put on the sidewall. My question is this: would it be a good idea to have the tyres filled with that stuff that seals punctures, such as Pro-tex ?

I stand to be corrected but surely putting such stuff in the tyre will affect the balance of the wheel.

Quite popular on motorbikes which don't carry a spare, the goop is distributed evenly by centrifugal effect.

Apparantly they can be mended if the puncture is in the middle of the tread but not if its near the sidewall.(Much the same as an ordinary tyre). Only difference is that they cost a lot more than a normal tyre to replace but i am sure that they will come down in price as they become more popular

I think that for all the bad write ups about the ride quality of these tyres and that fact that some manufacturers now don't fit them as standard (Lexus for one) they won't become more popular. I don't see that having a puncture, getting home and then buying a new and expensive tyre is a very good deal; changing a wheel isn't fun or easy but you can always get your breakdown service to come out and do it for you!

all BMW will be fitted with run flats as standard from 06 onwards. the suspensions are being "tuned" to accommodate the stiffer sidewalls. Mercedes are also developing down the same route, as are porsche and Ferarri. The industry expects that the majority of cars will be fitted with runflats in the next 10 to 12 years...
