1989 Golf GTi 16v high pitched whine - dodo
My beloved 1989 Golf GTi 16 has developed a sharp whine that increases through the rev range. I have checked the 'fan' belt and the pulley for the alternator. With no belt in place the noise continues and that rules out the water pump. The cam belt was replaced recently and the car was running well. I'm mystified! Thanks.

Were the cam belt tensioner pulley(s) replaced at the same time as the belt?

It may be that the cam belt is too tight. If this were the case, the whine would increase with engine temperature; the pulleys move apart owing to thermal exansion, increasing the cam belt tension further.

I agree with NC.Would suggest taking back to where T/belt was done and ask them to recheck tension.Further damage may arise if not corrected

surely if the cam belt was tooo tight the whine would decrease with temperature????
because as the engine/belt got hotter the belt would expand therefore being less tight??

The belt won't get that hot and won't expand much because of the material it's made from. The block and head will expand much more, especially if it's an ally head.
