Imported Cars from America - Greg R
I am looking to view some imported cars from America (i.e. left hand drive) or japanese imports.

I am in london and have heard that there are suppliers here where I can view a collection of these vehicles. Can anyone in the know point me in the right direction?

I have tried the standard google search but have found very limited information.

Any help would be much appreciated.

How about www.americancarimports.com for a start?

There's also a place in Kingston, but I can't recall its name.

If you type 'american car import' into UK Google then that brings back a huge number of results.

There is also 'Classic American' magazine that is chock full of adverts for importers. They might even have a website.

Just to say I went there and the prices were very, very expensive.

Anyone who knows of any other places with left hand drive cars in the UK (south west) or south coast!

There's a place at the bottom of Castelnau, cross Hammersmith Bridge and drive straight on about three quarters of a mile, on the left just before a traffic light. Just as you reach Barnes.

Also looks a bit expensive but there may be some older examples round the back.

I am not surprised given the location.
I have often surveyed the forecourt stock when waiting at the traffic lights.
e.g. lots of Hummers

Why not import one yourself? Its fairly easy to do and you could save yourself alot of money. I did it a few years ago.

As an example, a new Mustang GT Premium Coupe has an MSRP of $26,320 plus shipping and insurance costs of approx $1400. Total cost landed in UK is $27,720 or £14,590 at today's exchange rate. Add on 10% duty, 17.5% VAT plus a few hundred for SVA approval and you have a brand new 300bhp Mustang GT for about £19.5K which is a saving of about £6K on what UK importers are asking.

For the standard V6 210bhp Coupe the costs are £10,800 landed and about £14.5K on the road.

If you can talk the dealer into a discount (not difficult) and then handle the paperwork for tax-free export status you'll also have saved the cost of your airtickets and a two week family holiday while you choose your vehicle.

Here's a webpage by a colleague who has now done it twice.

If you purchase them in Germany you will save around 20 to 30 % on UK importer prices as Kevin says there is a lot of profit being made in the UK.There is a magazine similar to Auto Trader called Auto in Germany it is crammed full of US cars and SUVs.

What car are you looking for Greg?

Whats your citeria as imports tend to cost more? Is there a particular spec or something? Are you still looking for a camry?
Imported Cars from America - Greg R
I am looking for either left hand drive cars that are cheaper than uk, or even the same. Or an import from America. But everywhere I look, they cost more. But imports should cost less shouldn't they?

There is no amazing rush, just looking as my current car is still running.

Whats behind your thinking that imports should be less?I'm curious to know.
Imported Cars from America - Greg R
1. Well, when we look at trade in values, imports always get less money
2. UK people like UK cars: anything else will be seen as suspicious
3. The percieved parts problem.

I always thought imports were less. In addition, to get one from southamptons auction, they need an SVA test and certain work. so the hassle makes them cost less. A bit like accident damaged cars really.

And in the car mechanics magazine, it stated that imports from auction are considerably less, be it with the added hassle. Always interested me...I know, I am really sad!

Bear in mind your insurance company will probably 'load' left hand drive.

You mentioned either Japanese or US cars.

What is the specific reason for wanting one? Is it that you want an exotic car or do you just want to save money?

I must admit that at the prices charged over the pond US cars seem really good value for money, but you'd really need to want a specific model to go to all the trouble.

"What is the specific reason for wanting one? Is it that you want an exotic car or do you just want to save money?"

It is because not only am I looking for a nice car which imports are (they are different!), I also would love something slightly cheaper as well for the money!

Get a 12 quid ticket with Jet 2 to germany buy auto magazine drive back with a Mustang at the price you would have paid in the states,no need for import duty or any special tax or changing the lights .If you are serious you would have one by now.
