hi
i have a knocking sound coming from the front suspension when i go over a pothole etc. it sounds as if something is loose - a kind of knocking sound.
ive heard that there are issue with the front arms on these cars.
anyone have any ideas before i take it to the garage. it doesn?t effect the cars drivability but its probably worth getting checked out.
thanks

Upper and lower susp. arms fail regularly. Get a torch and have a look ( you can see the top ones easily without removing the wheel) at the bearings in the end of the upper arms they have a tendancy to pop out of the arm. The arm then rubs and wears away. Audi have a recall on the lower arms (I think) you might want to ring the dealer and check exactly what is covered.
My experience with an A4 is that the top ones can be done in 15 mins if the retaining bolt at the front comes out ok, otherwise you may need to remove the entire strut arm and spend several hours on it.
Its important when refitting the top ones that you dont tighten the bolts through the bearing with the wheel floating free, the arm needs to be hald up otherwise the rubber bush just tears free when you lower the car. I did it by jacking up the wheel hub to the normal position, some garages refit the wheel and lower the car before tightening.
hope that helps

Like mark99 says, it's really important to have the weight of the car on the suspension before you tighten the bolts. What I have done at home when changing the lower arms was to put everything back together and lower the car to the ground with the bolts/nuts in place in but not torqued, then drove the car up a pair of ramps to get access to the bolts.
My car also 'knocked' over bumps, which is how I first found the problem.
You'll need a laser suspension alignment done afterwards.
Hope this helps too.

Before taking it to the garage i mite take off the cover tray from underneath the car as when i looked underneath the car it rattles around quite a bit.
could well be the cover and not the suspennsion.

Hello Dave,
Had a lower suspension arm bush fail. I replaced the arm with an OEM unit at a cost of approx. £45.00-ish. Part came from Garrett-Wright in Slough, and is the basic triangular shaped arm with pre-fitted bushes.
