Just a quick question:
Has anyone got any tips etc for how long/what to do while bedding in the Ibiza Cupra (new). Mine's arriving soon and I just want to know how long I have to wait til it loosens up... :-)

Petrol engine.
Just take it very gently for the first 1000 miles not exceeding 4000rpm.
Thereafter, gradually increase the rev threshold.
It would be a wise idea to change the oil & filter after 2500 miles IMHO.

Running in - what a luxury. I took delivery of a new Lupo on Friday, and tomorrow the first of my pupils will start driving it with only about 120 miles on the clock. I will be living on my nerves till the first 1000k are out of the way. Luckily it won't take long.

I think the very latest thinking is that synthetic 'running in oil' fitted at the factory is to be left 'instituto' for at least 10,000 miles to allow everything to bed in?

Sorry, I don't agree with David about changing the oil and filter at 2.5k. I wouldn't change until the engine has done at least 10k and only after that start changing oil and filter every 5k. Definitely DO NOT fill with synthetic oil at 2.5k or the engine may never loosen up. Not exceeding 4k revs for first 1,000 miles, fine. After that, build up by 1k revs for every 1,000 miles travelled, so by 4,000 miles you are regularly hittling 7k. Leave the ESP traction control working for the winter. Have some fun in the Spring by switching it off. Press Office standard Cupras had a lot more than the listed 155bhp: probably more like the Cupra R's 180bhp. It's a brillian city car. Is it really necessary?
Two relatives with company cars routinely thrash them from day 1.
Both of their vehicles go back after 2 years typically with well over 100k on the clock. They experience no problems and it's rare for their vehicles to burn *any* oil even with this kind of mileage...
(Exception would be the old mans current Volvo V40 LPT which burns a bit)

Keep an eye on the oil level - VW Group engines often burn a fair bit of oil until the rings bed in. I have heard stories of Seats using a pint every 2,000 miles to start with. By the time you get to 100K it won't use any oil at all.

My Advice - boot it from day 1. Get the engine used to it. Always worked for me, especially with the VW 1.8T engine.

You know, that's EXACTLY what I wanted to hear from someone... Boot it! I can't belive I have to take my time.
Sadly, I feel bound to care for the little tyke and take it easy... I'm pretty sure after 5k or so the car's going to feel a lot more fun.
Read the reviews of the Cupra on so many websites and all of 'em say it felt quicker.. I wonder if all the Press cars had a little extra in them... pity if they did as they wouldn't have the *most* fair write-up. Nonetheless, I know of one buyer who got his from 0-60 in 7 flat - unmodded.

Of course it is very important to let the engine run for a while before switching off. After a hard drive through North Wales the turbo on my 1.8T Golf glows!! I then let it idle for about 5 minutes to cool down. Normally I run it for about 30 -40 seconds before leaving it.

I get the impression this is a turbocharged car? If so, when starting it up (esp. from cold) let the engine idle for about 8 - 10 seconds to allow oil to be pumped to the turbo and it's bearings. Don't go screaming off the instant it is started...turbo bearings don't like it!

Even VAG diesel turbos need to be simmered. VW now tewlls owners to do this in the owner's handbook.
