40 degrees here today, and the aircon is struggling.
However, I would have thought that if I have the aircon on recirculate then the air in the car will get colder than if it is using outside air.
I assume this becaue if it is using outside air it has to cool it down from whatever horrendous temperature it is whereas the air in the car is already something lower than that.
However, using approved scientific measures (I held my face in front of one of the vents) the air actually seems colder when it is not on recirculate and is using outside air.
Am I imagining things or is there something involved in this that I don't know.

p.s. I am prepared to accept that vodka may have tainted my scientific measuring process a little, but since one of the dogs buried the pool thermometer and can't remember where, I haven't got any other way of measuring the air temperature.

I tend to agree with you, that is the way it seems to me too. Yet the instruction for max a/c is to have it on recirculate. Maybe the air is fresher, ie less recycled air full of CO2, vodka fumes, methane etc etc??

Evaporation is the cooling process, as any fule kno...
If the humidity outside the car is lower than inside (on recirc, not all the humidity is taken out, and the combination of breath moisture, sweat, etc), there will be more evaporation when the cold air hits the face!

The humidity outside the car is most certainly a great deal higher than inside the car.

Why isn't it all taken out on recirc ? Since the air is less humid to start with (since it comes from inside the car) I would have thought even more would have been taken out.

Why ? Surely it will feel colder only because the air temperature, or conceivably the speed of delivery, changes. Assuming that the temperature of, and condensation on, my face remains mroe or less constant.

I am reminded of the story of the person (man/women, suit yourself) who was always asking this trader (any trade, suit yourself) for a discount. after a while the trader got fed up with this and said, excuse me; but how do you spell discount. There isn't any f in discount said the customer.

If you want to get rid of some of those 40 degrees I'll happily take them off your hands to warm mine up!! Stuck at the roadside today it felt like -40, why do all the outdoor jobs come along in Dec, Jan & Feb, has no-one heard of summertime??

Funny you saying that but I was having similar thoughts today but in a kind of reverse.
This morning it was very cold raw and damp and I had the heater on full when leaving home. To hurry the warmth up I placed it on recirculate and for the next ten minutes was experimenting on which was the hottest coming from the dash vents by changing to recirc and then with fresh air.
I came to the conclusion that there was either no difference or perhaps the setting from outside was probably hotter.
Decided it was the way the plumbing was installed even though I had expected the re-circ would have been much hotter.
