VW reliability myth - Keith Ewing
1997 VW Polo 1.4, 3 dr hatchback

Electric windows:

The electric windows have constatly given problems and have been rectified under warranty 4 times.

The car is now out of warranty (3 years) and the windows failed to operate within three days of the last rectification.

The dealer has refused to carry out furhter work unless I pay as VW will not recompense them with any of the work entailed.

The dealer also informs me that this window malfunction is a VW 'known problem' and incurrable. Further more cannot guarantee that the problem will not reoccur.

In my opinion this problem is a safety hazard. I am writing to the mauufacturers.

The car has not been without other problems which have been rectified under warranty.

After reading some of the other messages regarding problems with VW's it's quite surprising the number of times i've heard the VW reliability story. It's only a car after all and it's going to go wrong eventually whether it be a VW or a Ford, they're only machines at the end of the day. You take a chance with any car you buy and all you can do is hope that nothing goes wrong with it in the time that you own it. If the problem is a known one then that's not really good enough is it ? It's up to the manufacturer to sort it out.

My fuel level sender failed on my Polo and gave a false reading. It took nearly a month to get one from VW, the reason the dealer gave was that the fault was 'unknown'. If it had been a Vauxhall is would have taken a week at the most. I would play hell with VW and if you get no joy with them a letter to a large motoring magazine may help them wake up ( i threatened Vauxhall with some bad press and they woke up sharpish ). My car has been faultless ( touch wood ) and i would definately by another VW.

Good luck !

Yep its a myth.

MY GOLF HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE SINCE PURCHASE 9 MONTHS AGO. CRAP GEARBOX, SREENWASH ALL OVER THE INTERIOR ROOF TRIM ? THREE WEEKS AGO AND STILL NO SIGN OF REPLACEMENT PARTS.TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE AT SPEED ON MOTORWAY RESULTING IN NEW DASH POD BEING FITTED, AND YOU THOUGHT WINDOWS MIGHT BE DANGEROUS!!!! INCORRECTLY RE-FITTED DASH THE FIRST TIME .TOOK ANOTHER WEEK TO SORT.

SINCE 20TH FEB THIS YEAR I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS ON ONE OCCASION AND ONE HOUR ON ANOTHER.
IS THIS A RECORD?

AS THE ADS SAY SOME THINGS ARE BEST LEFT ALONE!!!

Did you know ?...

VW build some Golfs in South Africa, Passat in Hungary, Sharan in Portugal, Polo in Spain etc. So when you led to believe you are paying "extra" for German quality, sadly you are not getting this.

Could this explain Keith's problems with his Golf ?
Re: VW reliability myth - Alex
They have a VW badge and should have VW quality control. But in my experience don't.
