Fiesta 1,25 Zetec cold starting - George Ohlssen
My 1998 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec, shortly after starting from cold, 'dies' for a few minutes and then drives normally once it has warmed up slightly.
I have replaced engine oil, oil & air filters, spark plugs, but the problem still persists?

What oil did you use?
Re: Fiesta 1,25 Zetec cold starting - Dave N
There was a TSB from Ford for stalling when cold. It is number 024-1997, and it involves replacement of hydraulic tappets and pressure relief valve in the head. It also states the use of a different grade of oil, 5W-30, available from Ford.

If you speak to Ford, or mail me, I will give you more details, as it's a bit of a long one.

From the Ford TIS disc:-

All with Zetec and Zetec-E engines
This bulletin supersedes TSB 24/1997 dated 14.02.1997, which is no longer valid. Please destroy all previous versions. The labour times have changed, the location of the `11' punched on the cylinder head has changed. On engines built before 01.02.95, old type (green sealing rubber) exhaust valve oil seals should also be renewed.

Should a customer express concern over engine stalling during warm up, erratic running after a cold start, severe loss of power when the engine is warm or, on vehicles with CD4E automatic transmission, shuddering at speeds between 60 and 100 km/h (40 - 60 mph), the vehicle should be checked and re-worked exactly as detailed in this bulletin. If the concern cannot be resolved by following the checking procedure, revised exhaust valve hydraulic tappets and a cylinder head oil pressure relief valve should be installed as necessary. Also, on engines built before 01.02.95, old type (green sealing rubber) exhaust valve oil seals should be renewed.

NOTE:
The concerns described in this TSB can have various causes. It is, therefore, vital to test the vehicle at each stage before carrying out further repair work. The Special Tool (GV-2177) required to remove the oil non-return valve will be sent, without charge, directly from OTC-Europe (Löwener/Churchill) to all dealers who participate in the "Automatic Tool Supply Programme" (ATSP). All other dealers must order this special tool from OTC-Europe (Löwener/Churchill). The tool will also be supplied to these dealers free of charge.

Ford motor company issued a TSB concerning this problem which involved reprogramming the pcm module on fds2000 but only after carrying out normal diagnostic checks to the wiring harness fuel system etc.
