Peugeot 306 1.9TD or 2.0HDI TD? - Giles
Hi,
I am thinking of getting a turbo diesel 306. Not sure whether to go for the older 1.9TD or the newer HDI 2.0 TD. I know that the HDI is more economical, possibly a smidge better on performance, but I also know that the 1.9TD is cheaper second hand, and I think to insure, (but I'm not sure). I travel about 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year- would a petrol 306 be better insurance, economy and price wise?

Giles - I have owned 2 1.9TDs and test-driven an HDI. If you can afford it you will find the new engine more like a GTi to drive than a diesel. I was most impressed, not least because you don't have to wait for the glowplugs like you used to. If money forces a 1.9TD I would recommend you go for one without a cat-converter (I have had one of each) which dulls the performance, but only makes a slight reduction in economy. Look for a 95M-96N with a decent history. I got 50-55 mpg from my two cars.

Giles - PS - The diesels are probably in a slightly lower insurance group than the petrols and probably use 20-25% less fuel. Do your own sums. I don't believe there is a significant difference in maintenance cost.

I have a 306 diesel which is nearly 8 years old so I cannot help you with the turbo debate but in considering the savings of diesel versus petrol there are costs other than the fuel to take into account.

My car is still on its original exhaust and apparently this not unusual for a diesel as the oil helps to prevent corrosion.

With a diesel you get less electrical problems because the electrics are only used to start it.

On the other hand you should make sure you get frequent oil changes with a diesel

If you are looking for cheap insurance forget the turbo as the basic diesel is Group 3 or, in my case £90 per year fully comprehensive.

A further saving on Peugots is that in 8 years mine has only required a new battery, a set of front brake pads and new sunroof motor. But beware of Peugot franchise servicing.

Am I correct in thinking, though, that diesel engines need servicing about twice as often as petrol engines?

May be able to help here as I came at exactly the same question from the citroen xantia perspective. As i am sure you know Peugeot and Citroen models share common platforms and powertrains. Previously had Pug 205 and Cit BX diesels in non turbo form.
Would endorse everything said about the performance and refinement of the HDI version in either 90 or 110 PS incarnation. Simply a quantum leap.
Also (and I assume this follows in Peugeots) the HDI is married with a much sweeter new build gearbox and light action hydraulic clutch.
Don't think servicing is a massive issue, oil change is 12k miles, though see HJ's views on this for anybody doing less than rep mileages. Diesels needing more servicing was always a bit of a red herring as only ever meant more frequent oil and filter changes and you more then saved on exhausts, and all the non sheduled servicing needed to keep spark systems disciplined!!
