At the risk of boring people with timing belts, yet again, I thought the following to be reasonably interesting.
A road test of the Saab 9-5, published in Diesel Car (December issue), talks about the new 3 litre V6 turbo diesel that this car will be fitted with. It's sourced from Isuzu and has an interesting statement about the timing belt - I quote:
"This new engine is a low maintenance unit, with its single belt drive for the four camshafts being guaranteed for 155,000 miles...."
It will be intersesting to see what's actually in the vehicle warranty. Just imagine a trashed engine and a customer being told "never mind, sir - we won't be charging you for the belt!"
Or maybe, just maybe, this sort of life expectancy is feasible on such a conplex engine. I wonder what another part of GM (Vauxhall) thinks of that, with its notorious Ecocrap engine and belt rollers.
What do the usual supsect think.

Dunno - a lot of scope for catastrophe there. Still, it'd be nice to think Vauxhall had learnt from all those Vectras it had to stump up the repair bills for above problems.

probably needs 155k's worth of genuine Saab service history, which would be nice work if you can get it.
Probably an independent garage and a precautionary change of belt or two might be better value!

Always wondered this. When halfords sell you a Cam Belt with a 1 year gaurentee. - Do you get compensation for your bent valves?

Vauxhall parts counter were claiming the other week their belts were the best buy because if theirs snapped they would pay the whole bill, unlike anyone else who would just hand back the £12.50 for the belt leaving you with the £987.50 to find.
Took this with a pinch of salt. Imagine returning to them with a trashed 16V where all they had supplied was the belt, and that was 30,000 miles ago with an independent history in the glovebox. Bet it would be a fight.
Just as an aside I *know* the Halfords belts are very good and often exceed OE spec.

I hope the engine lasts longer than it does in the trooper. They are commonly cracking cylider heads alledgedly!
