Madame has been driving around in the spare company Golf after I inadvertently trashed a brake caliper on the AX. She has taken a shine to it, especially as the AX is a walk to the pub away from 100K miles, and wants me to buy one of the other Golfs off the leasing company when their time is up (shortly). It's would be a '99T TDi 90 in silver with 50K miles and full VW history. Carview values it at £7.5K which would get me a younger Citroen Xsara HDi (my preferred choice) if I felt like spending the money.
Anyone any experience of dealing with leasing companies? Any comments? Any idea of the Golf's real value in County Durham?

I'm not in this "area" of cars every day but some overall thoughts.
If you were being asked anything under 8K it ought to be worth looking at the deal. Yes you could look at a newer Xsara and I guess the engine would be better.
However I do have some concerns about the newer and more expensive Citroen's with all the "bits". Have to be honest I would have a real hard choice between that Golf and a Xsara, might prefer to see the Golf on the drive I have to admit.
In that safe silver as well, I think the lady just has to have it! Will she let you use it as a jetski tug though?
PS. Of course, to keep "on profile", in the lower price brackets I would still argue a £2.5K Xantia against a £2.5K Golf anyday.

A newer Xsara may look tempting but a Silver TDi Golf IV is as safe as houses in terms of residuals. 4/5 years down the line these will still be desirable-ish cars. Who wants to be driving a 7 year old Citroen? If it has alloys on it even better.
I know Citroen are getting new cars out of their showrooms very well at the moment, and some of them are quite good, but I still think that their residual values will be terrible.
Think of all those kev'd up Saxo VTR's littering the streets in 5 years time....

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of Citroen models I like. I hope to own a DS one day - ideally a decapotable (sp?) like the late Alan Clark. I love the look of the CX too. I just don't think that the more mainstream models have the long term desireablility of a VW.

Your comments taken in good spirit. My DS was one of my best motoring experiences ever, if you can afford a good one go for it.
Despite the fact that the CX should have found the same status by now it hasn't for some reason. I had two in their day and they were brilliant, now they are cheap to buy and often money pits.
Having said that I was very very tempted by a CX TD Safari the other day, as a second car. They're a monster carrying machine.

I know, somehow people just look bemused when I get I excited 'Look at that wicked CX!'
I want one of the Turbo Diesel ones, don't know much about them, but I know they were the fastest diesels available at the time :) Maybe I'll get one when I can afford to pay someone full time to keep it on the road!
