I drove south down the M40 earlier this evening - traffic heavy but moving well. Between Banbury and Oxford progress was halted and I was in a slow moving stop/start queue for 20 minutes. The cause was some police cars with blue flashing lamps on the hard shoulder of the opposite(northbound) carriageway. No evidence of an accident and all 3 lanes were clear in both directions. The queue heading north was several miles long.
Seems incredible that 'rubberneckers' can cause such jams.

A few years ago Friday tea time I was on the A1 going south somewhere near Wetherby. Been a long day which had started at Aberdeen so I was ready for home and a cuppa.
We had a long long delay due to an accident northbound. I was in lane 1 behind some guys in a Lada, sorry to mention THAT word but its the truth. Anyway as we get alongside the accident site Lada boys decide that as a humongous artic is alongside them in lane 2 and they can't see the accident site that they will STOP till the artic has cleared their view. Good job I and the rest of the queue behind were watching where we were going and not rubbernecking too or there would have been another shunt.
Unfortunately that is the sort of mentality we are dealing with.

I was actually agreeing with LAC for once amazingly enough, ie not all Lada drivers are stupid just as not all BMW drivers etc.

Bob H started a sensible thread, to which I replied in what I thought was a reasonable post. I wish now that I had kept out the fact that the car in front was not a toyota, but thats hindsight.
The thread has been reduced to garbage, and the site is rapidly following.
HJ and Martyn be warned there are a lot of reasonable posters out here who have been very very restrained over the last few weeks and are getting fed up, again! How many readers but are not posters must be getting turned off too, presumable the site stats will tell you.
Its your site do what you will.

Stuck in a holdup on the M6 earlier this year we trundled stop-start for a few miles. The holdup ended, and cars started picking up speed. There was absolutely no indication of what had caused the problem.
However, the traffic very gradually accellerated to about 60/65 from the 10 we had been doing. Problem was that the outside lane kept to the same spacing as they had at 10 miles/hour. The inevitable happened - from the middle lane we saw a large VW van ahead of us in the outside lane literally jump in the air as it rearended something. Passing the scene there were 6 or 7 cars seriously crumpled front and rear, including a couple where the seat backs appeared to have collapsed, with passengers rubbing their necks. No doubt a few serious cases of whiplash.
Just shows how the concentration can wander in such circumstances.

Typical M6 behaviour.
To make fastest and safest progress on the M6 between J10 and J19
on a Friday, stick to lanes 1 & 2.

After visiting SWMBO's parents on a Sunday evening, I managed to drive (circa 10pm) from Junction 16 to Junction 18 in the left hand lane at (dare I say it) 95mph.
Nothing astounding there but the outside lane was nose to tail with cars and through most of the journey there was nothing in the middle lane either.
Excuse the language but it's bloody mindedness and nothing else. Noone wants to pull over and give way to whoever is behind them because they think that THEY should be the ones overtaking everybody. In theory you could say I was breaking the law etc (though debatable as I did not deliberately set out to undertake, it's just my lane was moving faster :o) ) but also in theory so were they! Does this happen as badly in other countries? I found in Holland people use the lanes correctly and obey the temporary (electronic signed) speed limits - as a result, you might all end up doing 50km/h at times but you stay moving!

I dont mind reading about them now and again, but when every thread is turning into a 'Ladas are really good' brainwashing session it gets a bit monotonous.

This title really made me jump -- I thought at first it meant what we suffer from here on the Expressways (euphemism) in the 7,107 Philippine Islands had found its way to UK. I mean holdups like the stand and deliver give me all your money variety. We have them here in spates (usually the police are involved, or at least paid off by the "holdappers" as they are known here and they seldom get caught. Mainly at night.
But it seems the ghoulish human fascination with an accident scene knows no frontiers, I was recently in a 40 km tailback that lasted nearly 3 hours while everyone had a good look at a bus upside down in a rice paddy. Actually, he said shame-faced, actually.....I had a jolly good look too. Oh dear.

33 subject headings containing "Lada" - an average of a whopping more than 1 per day have been posted.
Mind you a whole 9 were posted by Ladas are Cool - and the other 14?
But then again I didn't bother to check if they were all in self defence against attacks on him and his Ladas.
