What Women Want - Paul Robinson
Had occasion to be with a large group of women (age 35 - 50), talking about mens cars. Thought you?d be interested to hear what they said. First the negative - they didn?t like GTI?s - aggressive and threatening. In fact all fast cars got the thumbs down! ?they take stupid risks, driving fast just because they can, it?s scary?. Status cars were also rejected as ?vain and arrogant?.

It seems these women liked men with very ordinary cars, provided that (and they applied the same criteria to mens clothes) they were not to be too old, nice colours, scrupulously clean inside and out, and looked well cared for. They particularly liked men who had the confidence to drive a simple supermini, as they considered a relaxed confidence the most attractive feature in a man!

It seems that just like women like to look thin to impress other women. Men must be choosing their cars to impress other men.
Re: What Women Want - Guy Lacey
Absolute cr*p.

Drive through any town/city and find me a stunning woman in the passenger seat of a Honda Concerto.

If u find a tenth of the beautiful women I find in the passenger seat of the following cars then u win all my savings;

Porsche 911
Any Ferrari
Audi TT
BMW M3 Convertible
(Golf GTI "Blue Edition" 1991 H in Bright Blue Metallic - LPG conversion)

Game on.
Re: What Women Want - Paul Robinson
I didn't say they were a group of ' stunning women'!
Re: What Women Want - David W
Game on indeed.

Guy look at the age range Paul was considering, stunning women (35-50) will have a very different outlook to the stunning women (17) you refer to/desire.

Re: What Women Want - Lee H
Heard only yesterday that women begin their prime in their thirties; there's a disparity here -

How many men aged less than 23 drive 911's? Aren't the girls the ferrari drivers fill their cars with every bit as much a status symbol as the car itself?

All looks, no substance.

at least that's what I'd like to think as I save up for the Exige ;)
Re: What Women Want - Guy Lacey
Hmmmm, DW - u r never wrong but....

Methinks u have *my* age bracket a tad low - 18 to 50 is passable! 17 a bit young.........they can't buy me a pint.

Bring on the lovely Carole Adams/Sue to give the female perspective. I still stand by my claim that women *are* attracted to a smart motor.

If only Women knew the virtues of a 10yr old German wreck that runs on LPG. "Not just thinking of their children, but their childrens' children" . . . . . . . . . . . & Guy's wallet.

Am I just being a *little* bitter and twisted?

Thank you Guy.

"The best 10 years of a woman's life are those from 39 to 40".
Re: What Women Want - Richard Hall
I can't say I noticed my pulling power increased significantly when I drove a newish Citroen AX, even though it was a nice colour (red). Perhaps I should have concentrated on older women. To be honest I don't think most women care much what car you drive as long as it's reliable, dry, and you give them a lift home in it at the end of the evening.
Re: What Women Want - Dan J
My other 3/4 (or is it half, I get confused these days) informed me she didn't mind what I bought to replace my Maestro as long as it wasn't a Maestro.

Face fell as I pulled up in her driveway in my new motor. Not the car (not a "car" girly, the sort who when I ask what sort of car her mate has just bought, get told "a green one" and am expected to derive all required info from this response) but the colour.

Apparently red doesn't go with most of her clothes...

Still, things have quietened down on that front since her parents' bought a s**t brown Audi :o)
babe magnet lada. - ladas are cool

This woman agrees with both these sentiments. And would also add that any car must also be easy to get in and out of. I'm still in my prime, but once had to move a girlfriend's sports car - sorry chaps, can't remember what type but it was bright red!!! Had extreme difficult climbing in and out, and once in didn't feel I could see very well either. Good job I was only moving it a few feet up the driveway.

Another nice touch is the radio ready tuned to BBC Radio 4, not too loud, especially if it's time for The Archers. ;-)
Re: What Women Want - Growlette
Interesting, I thought, as Paul started out with a very sensible thread here. Why am I not surprised when it develops into the usual corny old sexist stuff. Ferraris and age all came into it, although I didn't notice "boobs" being used. Perhaps I missed that one.

I suppose at least one man asking what women want is a step forward in the development of the human race, even if metaphorically being able to drag a woman off by her because your cave's better than his cave is still going on.

It all depends whether, as so many males do, you regard your automobile as extension of another appliance given to you by nature, or simply a utensil designed for a purpose. "Let me show you my tdIxp super" is pretty much on a par with the old one about etchings. It also depends on whether you regard a woman as another accessory (rather more expensive than the Halfords variety) to decorate the faux leather on the front seat of Dagenham's latest.

Chaps, women have as many variations and iterations as any other species. They go through phases just like you, although they seem to get through the growing up part rather quicker.

Me, I love fast cars/bikes, love be seen in/on one. THat's for fun at weekends.
For work I need comfortable safe reliable transport with enough protection around me so if one of those "phwoarmobiles" gets away from its guffawing driver as he's too busy trying to get the talent to notice him in what the company probably pays for anyway and collides with me, at least I can walk away on my (even if I say so myself) still neat pair of legs which will live to slide themselves over the front seat of man's fancy ragtop ride.

Why do you always think a car color's so important to a woman? As long as it's Candyapple red I don't care. I always think that goes best with parchment leather, don't you?

Go figure.
Re: What Women Want - Piers
When I drove my girlfriend Cinquecento I didn't notice loads of chicks throwing themselves at me.

Driving an old Mini when at school seemed to have a good effect - girls always wanted lifts. I think it was either 1, Every other bloke drove their dads good, but fast car and ended up in a hedge or 2, I was hot stuff. I suspect 1 is far more likely.......

My Caterham is a total put off to most women. It is impossible for my Girlfriend to get in wearing a skirt and preserve her modesty. Her hair ends up full of gravel and because of the noise she can't nag me effectively. I gave my sister a lift and she burnt herself and refuses to go near it anymore.

A word of warning - with a light car like a Caterham you really notice having a passenger. If you say this to a woman it means you think she's fat. You really can't win. My girlfriend hates my cars but loves saying (boasting) to people about 'the sports car' or 'the classic car'!

Well said, Growlette!

Equally interesting, Growlette was the only (acknowledged) female to respond to this thread. Maybe the others were deterred by the thread's inevitable descent. That's a pity, because I'd have liked a more balanced response. (That's not to say, of course, that Growlette's balance is not a hundred-and-one per cent perfect!)
Re: What Women Want - David W
Martyn,

Think you've been a bit hard on "us" all. Everyone's post was in good taste and quite reasonable. Guy was only playing to his forum character profile we all know and love.

If you look hard I think you'll see a little double bluff in most of the posts...we actually know we're beaten from the start.

And as a matter of fact no-one did mention boobs before Growlette, they may never have come up. For the record it was only LAC who was after 50 babes, the rest of us were happy with the one thinking woman we already have.

Fair comment, DW! I always knew I was watching over a group of unreconstructed males anyway. Nevertheless I think it was predictable (bearing in mind that previous Back Room discussions of women have generably been distilled to the size of VBH's bust) that the stereotypical view of women would be reinforced. For what it's worth, the last woman I saw getting into a Ferrari (my brother-in-law's) had probably spent more on her facelift than I spent on building my garage.

Talking of which, you were about to make a certain measurement for me? (And before anyone jumps to the wrong conclusion here I'm talking about tractors!)

It all seemed very mild to me too Martyn, at least we were credited with thinking - about what we like in cars, men, whatever ... Totally unreconstructed males wouldn't give us that much credit, would they? ;-

I've been out for the day!!! Give us a chance.
Re: What Women Want - Growlette
Thank you, kind sir (simpers).
Re: What Women Want - Soraya
Personally, what I want in a car is an indication of the man inside.
When I was 17 this was probably someone cute and fun driving a cute fun mini cooper s or an old Austin Healy Sprite, or any sports car (age and condition immaterial). Nowadays, IF I were looking I would be looking for subtle charm, elegance, power, money, maturity , reliability with possibly a slight foreign accent suggesting a well travelled combination BMW, Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, Porsche 911. Colour is silver or black or dark metallic blue.

I would also want to borrow it for nights out with my mates!
Re: What Women Want - Rebecca
Another opinion (32 year old, not stunning).

Women don't want cars with dangerously low street cred (game's up, Lada boy), but other than that, I would say most aren't bothered. Yes we may be pleased to look good in a 'performance' car, but it's a big no-no for a bloke to portray his car as his second greatest asset. ("That don't impress me much" etc etc). I'm sure the attraction to the driver comes first, and a nice car is a bonus that won't make up for personality defects.

Martyn - please excuse recent two weeks off sick. I've got a Doctor's note...

It better not be for 'hysteria', or worse, PMS. We don't need any of your weak lily-livered girlie excuses here. This is a man's world, ya know!

[PS Glad to see you back! M.]

Women also like guys whose driving demonstrates they are considerate and polite. "You first" goes down well.

Re: What Women Want - THe Growler
Sounded just like me, then I saw "dark metallic blue" included in what I took to be hair color.
Sex rears its handsome head - colin
I got all 'excited' when I saw the original title of this thread. Thought it would answer the question I've been trying to resolve for the past half century. But the thread is really only about cars.

I thought the same. Its not fair. Women know what men want (women). But we've got no idea what they want.
Re: What Women Want - Sue
I have carried on thinking about this while watching Andromeda with my sons.

Tell me honestly chaps, what did you think women would want? Something with 'street cred', 'pulling power' or whatever which requires you to spend a considerable amount of your free time keeping it on the road, thus depriving us of your company?

Or something which may not be the latest colour, latest trim, all bells and whistles, but which starts every time, never leaks, is comfortable on long journeys, takes all our shopping and children in comfort etc? And which we can get in and out of with decorum if we believe in flashing our legs?
Re: What Women Want - me
i can honestly say in all the cars i've driven the 911 is the only one which when pulled into a pub car park would cause girls to come out of the pub and up to chat to you... of course these are a certain type of chick

driving a mark II jag always grabs attention, and will get you talked to

outside that, i think the girls i like wouldnt go for the "nob in a gti or mx5", and are far happier with a sensible mota...

me i drive a sensible hatchback cos i like it... and in practise its just as fast on the roads...
Re: What Women Want - ladas are cool
hello sue, you have just said everything that the lada is, also i am a gentleman, and i believe that women should be treated as equals. i am the sort of person that opens doors for ladies, makes the meal, cleans up, does the shopping, but thats only if she helps out.
Re: What Women Want - smokie
"Or something which may not be the latest colour, latest trim, all bells and whistles, but which starts every time, never leaks, is comfortable on long journeys, takes all our shopping and children in comfort etc?"

If they were honest with themselves, isn't this also a description of what men want in women ? (j/k)
